On Tuesday, it was announced that French debt had surpassed the symbolic €2,000 billion mark. At the end of the second trimester, the debt stood at €2023.7 billion, equivalent to 95.1 per cent of GNP. It has doubled in the past decade.

The Nobel win comes, however, as France hasn't balanced a budget in decades, its economy is stagnant, joblessness is mounting and its deficit is rising despite repeated pledges to bring it within an EU-imposed threshold.
The Nobel prizes have become more of a reason to applaud progressivism than any sort of merit based reward and has been that way for some years. Al Gore and Obama both got them just to spit on Bush. It's a meaningless joke.
