Fuckin' shame. I was really pulling for Sony to lose, too.

Toshiba made it official.

This is certainly good news for the PS3.

Great news for the PS3. It'll be interesting to see what takes place in the next generation of consoles. Will Microsoft stick a Sony BluRay drive in its console?

I'll be waiting to jump on the BluRay bandwagon. I have a DVD upconverter, an HDMI cable, and a HDTV. How much better can they make a 2D picture?

Not saying the additional space isn't great because who doesn't want to watch 10 more hours of documentaries about a mediocre film? I'm just saying that every year there's something new that makes your picture "better" and I think we've reached the point where it's more marketing bullshit than actual quality.

Toshiba officially drops HD-DVD.

http://www.mania.com/57485.html

Unofficially, I don't think my standard DVDs look as good on my BluRay player than they did on a standard DVD player, in spite of the so-called "upconverting."

But I could be wrong.

In one scene in the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End BluRay, you can see the grease in the pores of Jack Sparrow's nose.

Not sure if that is a selling point.

I still think Sony is doing a really shitty job with the marketing of the Blu-Ray.

Here's something that is going to hurt Blu-Ray propagation:

I popped in my Heroes Season 2 Blu-Ray into the player for the first time tonight. The menu worked fine and looked good, but the entire system would freeze as soon as I tried to play an episode.

Internet search found another guy with the exact same problem with this particular Blu-Ray disk, and the advice he was given was to update his firmware. There was no further discussion as to whether it worked, or not.

So I plugged in my ethernet cable (I actually had to make a new cable that was long enough to reach from my basement to my player), went into the player menu, saw that DHCP was "On," and told it to start the update process. It said, "Hey, there's a newer firmware out there, want to upgrade?" I said Yep. So it began... and it hung for about 10 minutes, then it said, "You don't have an internet connection." I thought, then how did you know there wasupdated firmware, shithead?

Fuck.

So I played with the cable, router, and even plugged the thing directly into my cable modem. No dice.

Went back online, now I'm troubleshooting "How to upgrade my Saumsung BD-P1400." Turns out that if you can't connect the internet to your player, you can hit samsung.com, download a disk image, burn it to a CD, pop that in your player, and it'll update in about 15 minutes by following a few directions.

This actually worked the first time.

So my plan this Saturday night was to order piza and watch a couple episodes of Heroes with the wife, instead we ate the pizza while watching an episode of Penn & Teller's Bullshit, and then I spent the next 2 hours of my Saturday night trying to get my blu-ray player to play a fucking blu ray disk.

Fuck, that was bullshit.

"BD uses Java, and just as the language keeps getting updated, so will the firmware of the player so it can run the latest Java."

Bullshit. They need to use just one version, period, because it works just fine. Two fucking hours on this fucking bullshit.

I might actually buy another one at that price.

Had to update my player's firmware again in order to play the new Pinocchio BD. Lot less aggravating when I knew what to do the first time, and not spend a shitload of time researching the problem.

Also, the internet conx worked this time. Didn't need to burn a cd.

edit - I almost wonder if part of this firmware updating is a form of DRM... changing the encryption which makes pirated stuff useless. I dunno. Just wondering.

Was just poking around seeing what the current-gen BD players were like.

Looks like they are sub-$300, and have lots of interesting features not directly related to the playing of Blu Ray disks...

..has Wireless N for Netflix, CinemaNow, BD-Live & YouTube.
It'll also have 1GB of built in memory.

Watching Netflix DL's directly through your BD player. Interesting.

Regarding the "Digital Copy" that seems to come with a lot of BD's I have purchased.

On many of the BD's I have purchased, in addition to containing the BD they contain a regular DVD version of the movie, as well as a "digital copy" that can be loaded onto your portable devices. Or so they would have you think.

I got a Blackberry recently, and was excited about loading some of my BD movies onto it via the "digital copy."

You load the disk into your PC, click some buttons, and a copy.... an encrypted copy... copies onto your PC.

And with the encryption, it will only play on a Zune, or the PC onto which you loaded. Doesn't work on Blackberry for no fucking reason in the world besides that "they" don't want it to.

This has me pirating ripped versions of movies that I already purchased on BD just so I can play them on my portable device.

Fucking assholes.

Anytime I buy a DVD the first thing I do is pirate a copy of it. Then stick the DVD on a shelf and never even open it. Because I don't even have a DVD player. I have an NMT that I use to play movies off my NAS.

I still buy DVDs, but it won't be much longer before I give up and just skip that step altogether, and to hell with the distributors.

I could see that being even more fun with a Netflix account.
