Th HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Megathread

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

Has anyone taken the plunge, yet? As time goes by I am able to see more and more limitations of standard DVD's on my big screen, and I'm almost ready to begin to consider the possibility of the idea of buying into a high def player.

So if anyone has any insight, share.

Blu-Ray is out selling HD-DVD by 3 to 1 in Europe.

Here in the U.S. the vast majority of Blu-Ray players that have been sold are PS3s.

In other words, if it weren't for the PS3 there wouldn't be a debate.

In related news, ALL HD-DVD players access the web. Not all Blu-Ray players do. Why is that important? Well, starting with the new Harry Potter flick, HD-DVD will be releasing a new feature where you can watch movies with friends...from different places.

Blu-Ray is Sony. Blu-Ray can rot in hell.

What if it's a limitation of DLP that you're noticing?

It isn't. Time Warner just added HD Theatre channel that broadcasts in true 1080i, and the improvement over DVD quality is shocking.

FYI - I've learned that not all HD channels are the same. The cable companies are reducing resolution of some of them in order to fit more of them on the same pipes without upgrading the infrastructure.

You can buy porn on HD-DVD. You can't buy porn on Blue Ray, they won't liscense it.

I mention this because traditionally that's the killer ap for media standards. It's why VHS beat Betamax when Betamax was actually better, for example. I'm not sure if that will still hold true in the Internet Age, what with porn moving mostly online these days, but historically Blue Ray would be doomed because of that choice.

You know, that sounds like a great idea at first.

But the more I think about it the scarier is sounds.

I'm now getting angry at my HD HBO channel when it doesn't look half as clear as the goddam nature shows on HD Theater.

I suppose I should get angry at Time Warner cable.

I read somewhere that Comcast cable boxes used to display the resolution of whatever you happened to be watching at the time right on the cable box, but after people started complaining about reduced resolutions, they disabled that functionality with a firmware patch.

Comcast is performing asstacularly up here. They're about the only game in town, though.

Amazon's got a sale right now... HD player for $250ish, and 10 movies free.

I've heard bad things about the A3/A30 with regards to loading/booting times. This may be a function of HD-DVD, not sure.

Since I didn't buy a DVD player until January of this year... I guess I'll be waiting for a while for the high-def too.

I can live with a longish load time for a DVD player. It isn't something I need to have on NOW RIGHT THIS SECOND.

Assuming you don't mean, like, a 6 minute load time.

Like a minute to boot, then 20-30 seconds to load.

20-30 seconds to load the DVD and then everything moves fine or 20-30 seconds between menus and each time you hit enter?

A minute is about on the far edge of what I could tolerate.
