Th HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Megathread

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

I know Walmart was selling an HD-DVD player for around $100 before Thanksgiving. They sold out pretty quickly.

I read an article from an analyst that said unless Sony did something similar quickly, that could be the beginning of the end of the format war.

I've been noticing commercials where one of the movie houses only mention offering HD-DVD. Universal maybe?

But I *think* there are other studios only on Blu-Ray... so dunno.

I'm thinking if we start seeing cheap hybrid players (from CHina), both formats will be around for a long time.

Porn killed Beta. Porn will kill Blu-Ray.

I will enjoy watching Sony suffer.

PS3 owners demanding porn.
More news coming from Hi-Def Digest today as they're reporting porn studio Digital Playground has decided to go dual format after being HD-DVD only for quite some time. Reason for the turnover: PS3 owners have been complaining a lot about the lack of porn for their machine

In explaining his company's move to dual-format support, Joone told CEPro that "A lot of people were emailing that bought a PlayStation and they were basically saying, 'When are you guys going to release Blu-ray?'"

First title to be released by Digital Playground on Blu-ray will be Pirates (on January 4th) which will feature a butt-load of extras including behind-the-scenes footage, bloopers, casting videos and trailers.

Sounds like a Cake movie.

Well, I think that gives BR a content advantage overall.

Since I didn't own a DVD player until January 2007, though, I think I've got a while to decide.

That'll depend on how many Playstation III owners buy movies.

You know, I just realized... if one or the other formats dropped their DRM, they would win the war. If either one dropped DRM, I would go ahead and buy THAT player safe in the knowledge that if the OTHER format wins, I can still rip and store and watch the now-obsolete disks I owned. They wouldn't be lost as soon as the player died. It would be a safe bet and I would NOT ultimately need to re-purchase those same disks on the other format.

Know what I mean?

From what I've been reading HD-DVD has a more liberal license with their stuff. You're allowed to make a backup of the media. You're allowed to stream the content within your home. Haven't seen this myself, but that's the word on the street.

I'm really not sure how DoJ is NOT going to get involved with the Warner Bros deal since Sony more or less paid them a half a billion dollars to go BR exclusive.

Do you have any links for that $500 million? Cuz all I've been able to find is rumours. An interview with the head of WB had him cracking some "If you know where I can pick up that $500 million, tell me" joke.

Just want to know if it's fact or rumour.

I've been reading this Warner move to Blu-Ray actually means HD-DVD is done, not a stalemate.

I guess content wins since the HD players and disks have been cheaper for the last year, at least from what I've noticed.

The wost part, I think, is that Sony finally won a format war.

Either:
a) They've made up for their mistakes of the past, or
b) They got lucky, and this will encourage them to just keep doing it.

New Line (owned by WB), has gone Blu Ray only.

That means LotR is Blu Ray only.

Read the WSJ article printed somewhere. It didn't give a dollar amount. But they offered to pay for all their Blu Ray promotion, so that's some big bucks. Plus the guy from Warner said it wasn't about the money.

So that means it was about the money.
