The Avengers *SPOILER THREAD*

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

So, did Joss Whedon get his "barefoot girl" moment with B;ack Widow beating up those Russians, barefoot? She even picks up her high heels as she leaves.

I was reading this interview with Joss, and I found this bit interesting:

http://www.mania.com/mania-interview-joss-whedon_article_132802.html

Q: There's an interesting balance between the action, characters and the conflicts they have, such as Iron Man rejecting the soldier mentality Captain America had. How did you develop these characters? Any ideology involved?

JW: Well you have to write something that you believe in. Captain America was kind of my ground zero for this film. The idea of someone who had been in World War II, had seen people laying down their lives in the worst kinds of circumstances, in a world where the idea of community and the idea of a man being somebody who is a part of something, as opposed to being isolated from or bigger than or more famous than it… it’s a very different concept of manhood than what we see today. The way that it, in my opinion, has kind of devolved from Steve to Tony is fascinating.

Obviously you're not gonna stand around and speechify too much, but the idea of the soldier – the idea of the person willing to lay down their life is very different than the idea of the superhero. And since I wanted to make from the start a war movie, I wanted to put these guys through more than what they would be put through in a normal superhero movie. It was very important for me to build that concept and to have Tony reject that concept on every level so that in the end when he's really willing to lay it on the line, you get where's he's come from and how Steve has affected him.

In all the spectacle, I had missed that character arc. Well played, Whedon.

Another Whedon moment:

The bad guy is about to launch into a big I AM STRONG AND YOU ARE WEAK AND I WILL CRUSH YOU monologue, and before he gets 5 words out Hulk just grabs him and ragdolls him.

Totally reminded me of the scene in Buffy (or Angel?) when they are in some circle of Hell, and the bad guy in on a ledge talking to all these kids how they will be his slaves for eternity, and the little girl behind him just pushes him off the ledge 4 seconds into his speech.

Good stuff.

I got the biggest laughs from the Hulk. Hardest I have laughed in a long time.

I think there was another scene post-credits that we missed.

Why?

What have you heard?

By the way, for others who come here, that guy smiling at the Earth is Thanos, and he can beat the shit out of The Avengers.

I heard there was another scene post-credits, not just the one we saw after the main actor credits.

One thing that is bugging me is Hulk... is coherent when green, or not? On the airship with Black Widow, he seemed completely out of control. In the final ground battle, he seemed PRETTY MUCH in control, except maybe for a bit of an adrenaline problem with Thor, heh. He could even communicate and had a pithy one-liner with Loki.

So what's the deal.

Banner and the Hulk have always fought for control. Banner wants the Hulk gone, while Hulk wants Banner gone.

There are moments of "happiness" though.

When the Hulk was created, he was just stupid. However, throughout his history he's had moments where he was semi-intelligent, which is what I think we saw in the film. He's even had moments where he was Banner's brain and Hulk's brawn.

So long story short, he could literally be portrayed anywhere between full on tard and top ten smartest in the world.

There is a scene we didn't stay for. It was brilliant.

Hey Gordo, you know the bad guy who talks to Loki, and then is talking to Thanos is the first end credits scene?

Did you know that's Wesley?

Just wanted to say that I really liked the exact moment they became a real team.... NYC is going to hell, they manage to group up on the street, and Tony Stark says, "Call it, Cap." He was giving command and authority to Captain America, the actual soldier among them, after the dramatic, "WE ARE NOT SOLDIERS" scene on the airship, and well establishing himself as "not a team player."

So Cap assesses the situation, and starts with the line everyone in the military knows, "Ok, listen up." He assigns his air asset to containing the battlefield, and keeping strays from getting out. He assigns his sniper to a high perch. He assigns his cannon, Thor, to thin out the enemy still streaming through the hole and try to bottleneck it. He and his ninja will stay on the ground doing what they can to control the battlefield kill box and protect the noncombatants.

And to Hulk, he gives a simple command, "Smash." Hulk smiles like a child on Christmas morning, and proceeds to rampage through the enemy.

One great scene out of many. I want to see it again.

Yeah, I have my second viewing planned for this week, and I know I'll want to see it again.

Put my down for the Blu-Ray too.

It's hard to imagine to a super hero movie being much more of a spectacle than this.

One question though: Why close the gate when the aliens have all given up the fight already, but Iron Man isn't back yet? I mean, they didn't know if he would come back or not, but there was no risk in having the thing open at the moment.

And I need to find the end credits scene(s). We had to rush out because my parents were watching the kids.

I assumed it was because of the nucular explosion and stuff.

Anyone notice that the aliens coming down through the gate was a lot like a game of...

wait for it...

Galaga?

Yeah, so then nuclear explosions in space obviously have their own set of issues: no air, etc, etc....
