The Aristocrats

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

Recently, a clip involving the kids from South Park has been making its way around the web, and I recently posted it in our Internet Links forum.

I've never heard why the clip was made and quite honestly, the joke isn't funny. It's the characters that sell the bit, and it made sense that Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of South Park, were just trying to be offensive to make some point.

As it turns out, its for a film called The Aristocrats..

That joke was picked purposely because it isn't funny. The movie is a showcase of how 100 comedians tell the same joke. Its the film creators' way of showing how each comic is an artist and puts their own spin on everything.

The South Park version is obviously way over the top because that's their style of humor. They believe nothing is off limits.

Now the real joke probably does not contain references to 9/11 and incest, but its still so offensive that some of the comedians refused to tell it. Others took it even farther, like the South Park guys.

An interesting side note to this is that I had heard NOTHING about this film, until that article hit Yahoo. Now I'm very interested in seeing it.

Do you think that the intention of those opposed to this film was to generate a buzz?

Don't they realize that sometimes it's better to ignore something rather than give it publicity?

Remember, Married with Children was dead on arrival for its first week on TV, then some dumb bitch in Michigan started up a big stink about how it should be pulled from the air as it was so offensive to women. The following week it was a huge hit and it ran for 8(?) years. Had she shut her yap, it probably would have been cancelled.

Controversy seems to work in geting things cancelled about 5-10% of the time. (see: that ABC show about the Christian neighborhood, etc) The other times it just makes big fat hits out of things.

I still don't get why that neighborhood show was cancelled. I mean isn't that every season of the Real World?

"Let's put a poor mexican guy, a redneck, a rich white valley girl, a fat city chick, a french guy, a well off black girl, and a midget in a one bedroom apartment and see what happens! For added wisdom, let's make sure they're between 18 and 22 years old because people at that age really know what they're doing and have their priorities straight."

P.S. I just edited the links in my first post in this chain to include the clip from the South Park version of the joke and to include the trailer for the film itself.

I heard this morning that it was actually a very old vaudeville joke going back a long long way. They said it was sort of a challenge among comedians to sell a very lewd joke with a punch-line that made no sense at all.

I just cut, pasted, and ran.
What happened? There was no code other than the quote boxes, so I figured nothing could go wrong.

I'm sure you didn't do it on purpose, but I'd rather not say and give you any ideas. ;)

Finally watched this over the weekend.

Very good film.

I recommend it to anyone who likes stand up comics.

George Carlin, Penn and Teller, Matt Stone and Trey Parker (South Park), Chris Rock, Stephen Wright, Gilbert Godfried, Whoopie Goldberg, Jon Stewart, and a bunch of other comics (I know I'm forgetting some big names) and agents discuss the history and purpose behind an old joke.

Good stuff.

I had really wanted to see this when it hit theatres, but I think it ran limited showings and never opened where I was at the time or something.
