Full Metal Jacket - At 'Dem Flicks with Malcolm

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

If you've not seen this film, do it. Period. Private Joker, the Gunny spouting the dialog that made him legendary, Vincent D'Onofrio's rather freaky mental collapse, the quintessential Asian hooker trying to ply her trade in broken, crude English, all worth seeing. & it's Kubrick, so bonus.

Verdict : 9 of 10.

I kind of think of this as two movies slapped together. The first movie is entertaining. The second one...not so much.

This is one of those movies that exists in almost every boring Marine duty hut.

Civilians watch this movie and get shocked..."Did you SEE what they did??!!??"

Marines watch it, laugh, and say the exact same thing.

The "first movie," as Thib described it, is an extremely accurate view of Marine Corps bootcamp.... except the physical abuse can't be out in the open any more. Too many whiny recruits writing home to mommy who calls her congressman and demands something be done to those mean drill instructors yelling at her precious little snowflake.

But even movie 2 is fairly accurate... out in "the field" with plenty of patrols and plenty of downtime, things can get pretty confused. These days, though, air support is usually only minutes away, in the case of the honey-pot-sniper-dealie near the end.

I agree with Thib.

The first part is must see.

The second part tries to "be more than just entertainment" and fails.
