Concert was in a club called "I-Rock," north of downtown. Sorta shady neighborhood, but I was surprised and pleased to find a parking spot right outside the front door... in spite of showing up 2 hours after the doors opened, hoping to miss the opening acts.

At 9:30 the first act hadn't even gone on, and there were still a couple tables open... the place was almost empty. I wondered... could this awesome band really be unknown in Detroit?

The opening band came out, and they were horrible. It was like a bunch of jackasses in "goth" facepaint learning how to play their instruments in front of a live audience. Their name was "Forgotton Future," typo and all. I suggest avoiding them at all costs. Their lead singer also talks and sings like a Dalek. Couldn't understand a word he said. He also held various medieval/exotic swords and axes and shit for each song. Too bad all the weaponry couldn't help them make enjoyable music.

The second band... I wish I could remember the name, because they didn't completely suck. The lead guitar guy must have studied Wayne Static a lot, because the tunes had a Static X vibe. They weren't bad.

So now it was time for Leaves' Eyes to come on, and the place had exactly 53 people inside, and 10 of them were from the opening bands. They came out and everyone went to the stage, and the crowd wasn't more than 3 people deep. I felt sort of bad and embarrassed for the band... they were way better than the turnout suggested.
After the first song Liv, the lead singer, was chatting a bit at the audience... mentioned the small turnout.... and then thanked Sharon Osbourne for scheduling Ozfest in Detroit on the same night. Ah, that explains it. Bigger metal concert in Tiger Stadium.

So then I didn't feel so bad, and got a kick-ass concert in a very intimate, damned near private setting. I was so close I could see that Liv didn't have any freckles on her cleavage. Mmmmm.

And everybody whipped out cameras, and that ticked me off because I am used to getting searched at the door and only had a shitty camera phone.

After the concert the band came out to meet-n-greet... and I really wanted to meet them but I knew I had nothing of interest to say... so I was torn... but then Liv Christine brushed against me as she walked be, so I knew she wanted me, so I was content and could leave happy.

I want to go to more Leaves' Eyes concerts in the future, but I'll never see them again in that intimate a venue, so it's almost like no other concert will ever measure up.

TPR, they'll be in Houston on the 9th, I believe. Tickets in Detroit were $15.

Malcolm, they already came through Minneapolis. Your loss.

They'll be touring again in 2008. I recommend you hit them up.

Here's their Myspace. There's a few of their tunes on there so you can see what they do.

Oh, I forgot. The opening act came out, and the dj/sound mixer guy killed all the TV screens in the joint that were showing music videos. Then about 90 seconds into their first shitty song, the dj turned the tv's back on and put in a DVD of "America's FUnniest Home Videos." While the shitty band played shitty music the audience was laughing at babies wiping out on sleds on TV.

Was pretty funny all around.

Here's the band playing what looks like a full concert hall. They must have really hated that shitty turnout in Detroit.

I am bumping this thread for Leisher: he overheard a LE song playing on my phone this weekend and asked about it. So here's a few songs to peak his interest:

This is a Norwegian progressive metal band, and they do a lot of songs about Vikings. Which is pretty awesome. I was telling Leisher the story of the first time I saw the band in concert opening for Blind Guardian, how as some recorded orchestra strings spun up the metal gods emerged from the stage wings and took their wide stance positions, pics in hands, hair in face, then the pretty girl comes out in her flowing red dress, arms spread, takes center stage, and as one the thunder gods sledge hammer their guitars, hair flying, and her sweet voice sings the song...

Well here's that song, live. It was a few albums ago that i saw them, so I guess they don't open with it any more.

<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Here's the studio version of Solemn Sea, another from the same album. Another Viking tune. The dude growling is the chick's husband, Alexander Krull (IIRC), who also sings in the metal band Atrocity. Never heard anything from them.

<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

New Found Land. More Vikings.

<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

And, finally, one that I think is pretty, and fuck you if you have an opinion about that. This is the song that will also get your wife liking the band.

<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

All of these songs come from Vinland Saga. I suggest you buy it.
