I typically buy the cheap stuff (not actual maple syrup) because I am the only one who eats it and it gives me a nostalgia for my childhood when we never had any nice things.

I usually get Mrs. Butterworth because the bottle has big boobs, but the last time I was shopping the Log Cabin had a big NO HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP label on it. I just grabbed it and went.

The first time I used it I glanced at the ingredients. First ingredient in the list: corn syrup.

But I guess it isn't high fructose?

At any rate, I consider it a lie. Don't buy Log Cabin fake maple syrup.

And hey, I just googled it for a pic and I found this video.

I am going to have to look at my Hunts ketchup, too. It also advertises "No HFCS."

There's a huge difference between HFCS and simple corn syrup. For one thing corn syrup is a very common and perfectly natural ingredient while HFCS is corn syrup that has been treated with enzymes and then separated via liquid chromatography to artificially convert 90% of the glucose into fructose. There have been some studies that show some potential negative effects from HFCS beyond those normally associated with high-sugar foods. There are no such findings about corn syrup.

This is exactly like complaining that something advertised as "preservative free" still has a little salt in it. It's completely missing the whole point of the initial claim.

Those people in that video are idiots.

Did it actually claim to be maple syrup? I didn't think Log Cabin ever claimed to make maple syrup. They make corn syrup, plain and simple. It's chemically identical to maple syrup, just comes from a different plant and has different trace impurities which produces a different flavor profile.

Well the version without HFCS, at least. The HFCS version is definitely not chemically identical.

Well thanks for the science lesson. I don't consider myself an idiot, but all of that was news to me. I thought corn syrup was corn syrup, regardless of the fructose level, and that the advertising was targeting people who preferred old-fashioned cane sugar and then duping them. That was me. I guess I am actually an idiot.

Nah, not as long as you weren't being as knee-jerk anti-corporate mush-brained as the guys in that video then you aren't an idiot. If you were, then yeah, I guess so, but that doesn't seem like the GORDON I know.

You can make syrup out of any plant that has a glucose content. I'm sure there are still brands of cane syrup on the market, but corn is so much more abundant thanks to the stupid agricultural taxation policies of our federal government. Unless it specifically says "cane syrup" or "maple syrup" or "rice syrup" or whatever, it's almost certainly made from corn. Most everything we eat is to one degree or another these days.

"Pepsi Throwback" is original recipe Pepsi from the 70's from when they still used cane sugar. That's what I want. That's what I buy. "Hunt's Ketchup" advertises "No HFCS" on their label, and an ingredient list just showed me "sugar." One assumes it isn't "corn sugar" or they would have to label it as such. I could be wrong, but I have a dollar that says I am not. So when Log Cabin comes around with "No HFCS" in large font on the label, then uninformed consumers, in my opinion, will absolutely be duped into thinking it is something that it is not. I was duped. The people in the video were duped. It seems very dishonest to me.

The originally proposed name for HFCS was "corn sugar" but the FDA nixed that. So it could be a lot more dishonest than it is.

"Sugar" in a food implies that it was actual crystalline sugar. While technically you can get that sort of sugar out of anything you can make into syrup, it's not really economical to make "corn sugar" into a solid form like that. So if the primary sweetener is listed as "sugar" then it is almost certainly either from sugarbeets or sugarcane with the former being more likely.

I don't think Log Cabin is trying to be misleading with that label, though. The whole anti-HFCS movement has been a thing in the past few years and public knowledge about the differences between regular corn syrup and HFCS has increased quite a bit. There've been calls to ban HFCS from all food in favor of going back to regular corn syrup instead. The "No HFCS" labels are a response to that trend more than a hint at a full throwback to good old (and many times more expensive) cane sugar.

I buy real-sugar Cokes to drink at work. They're made in Mexico with real old-fashioned cane sugar. And they're about ten times as expensive as regular modern Coke made with HFCS.
