Australia banned social media for kids under 16.

To be honest, I'm ok with this. Study after study has shown that social media has been mostly harmful to kids. I like that they admit this really is impossible to enforce and that punishments are aimed at corporations and not parents/kids.

However, I can see the downside of this as kids flock to more toxic places like 4Chan, Discord, Dtman, etc. Still, it's a baby step towards something.

We cannot get Draconian, but we can't do nothing either.

Speaking of Draconian...

Here's other things Australia is up to and a lawyer responds below. Basically, GFY.

I have no context for that tweet.

Australia has an eSafety department that is trying to fine foreign entities for anything on the internet that might offend someone in Australia.

Whoa, like foreign entities not even in Australia? I guess if they visited Australia, they could enforce it?

As far as I understand it, yes.

I fully support any effort, even ones that fail before they start like this one, in keeping kids off SM as it's been proven to be super bad for them (and adults if we're being honest). However, I will not support efforts that attempt to silence people. The problem with trying to regulate speech is that morals change and never in the history of man have the people who controlled speech not done something horrible with that power.
