A group of researchers are stationed in an frozen wasteland. The closest people being over 100 miles away. They are essentially archaeologists and have recently sound something buried for thousands of years. That's when shit gets nuts.

This reminds you of something right? Well, they even put the title of that other film right on their box in the summary of this film. This film is an homage of that one, and sadly not very well done. They get a lot right. They have some of the character names from that other film, and a black guy, and snow, and slow pacing, and awesome night time wide angle exterior shots, and a lot of stolen plot points, etc.

What's bad is the acting, the explanations for ANYTHING that takes place, the lack of weather to give us the impression it's cold, everyone smoking to cover up the fact that it's so warm nobody has frost breath, and just a bunch of bad scenes by someone trying to capture magic they once saw someone else capture.

I really respect the filmmakers for trying, but you can't properly homage that other movie with a budget of tens of dollars. I mean, when you can't afford to properly dub in gun fire, you've got problems. (A one shot rifle being used was basically completely silent...indoors...and had no muzzle flash.)

The worst thing, however, was the bullshit mythology they tried to explain the movie with and the baddie when he appears. I started laughing, and I'm pretty damn certain that's not what they were going for.

Just watch John Carpenter's The Thing and skip this one.

Speaking of that movie, I recently read that Tarentino's The Hateful Eight was a remake of Carpenter's The Thing. And it makes a lot of sense.
