John Dies at the End - Yay! Netflix

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

I don't know what kind of statement they are making with that title, but here's a red band trailer.

I have no idea how to review this movie.

I guess I'll start by saying that they had me hooked within the first 10 minutes. Hooked enough to move from my iPad to a big screen.

The movie was funny, interesting, and I got vested in the main character, Dave.

That all being said, I don't have the slightest idea what the fuck I watched.

This is NOT a film for just anyone. It's listed on Netflix as a horror, but it's more of a comedy. In fact, there isn't a single scare. Lots of gore though.

I didn't love it or hate it. I just simply was entertained, but very confused.

I've heard Donnie Darko mentioned when talking about this film, and I get that, but I think it's wrong. There's no angst in this film, and it isn't terribly dark. This is more like white Harold and Kumar star in Supernatural written by Kevin Smith & Quentin Tarrantino and directed by David Lynch.

And that description still isn't accurate.

I was with you up until "David Lynch." There is no "like ... Lynch" or half-Lynch. There is "Lynch" and "not Lynch."

That's a fair criticism of my pitch.

I'm not a fan of Lynch, but I used him because I needed someone known for a particular style.

Remove Lynch, and replace with Evil Dead Sam Raimi or really early Peter Jackson.

For directors whose minds are a complete tangle of mystery to everyone except themselves, you can't beat David Lynch or Werner Herzog. Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson will happily have severed body parts crawl around and attack people, but it's all with a comedic bent. Lynch dresses up a dude in a suit, puts a giant rabbit head on him, and plays it off like it has real meaning.

Yeah, pretty much.

Movies I was reminded of while watching this movie:

Naked Lunch
Donnie Darko
Dude Where's My Car
(That movie about the gonzo reporter getting really high in the 70's... the Johnny Depp "Bat Country" movie)

I don't think I have enjoyed a movie yet which showed long, drawn-out sequences where a dude is getting high and having hallucinations.

BTW, "Yay Netflix")

John Dies at the End (Amazon Prime)

I really enjoyed it, and would watch it again.

I thought the ending was kind of lame.
It's obviously a part of a bigger story line (I think it's a book series), which leads to some problems.

The premise is that there is evil trying to invade our planet and only those who have attained special psychic powers can save the world.

Watched it. I was entertained, but as others said, not really sure what the hell that was all about. The soy sauce had a lot of potential to do a lot with, but I felt it was under used.

This is vaguely interesting. I remember reading Wong's work on cracked, including his serialization. That said, it was far more tame than I thought. The prose is way more fucked up. They see lots more indications of the other side leaking in, including exponentially more hallucinations and trippy visuals. It's implied they see it so often that they just get used to it. It's like you're permanently in a Silent Hill-type landscape designed by David Cronenberg on LSD. Anyhow, the flick.

This is pure Coscarelli, whom you know from Phantasm and Bubba Ho-Tep. The source material has been edited quite a bit and trimmed to fit in a 90-minute standalone package with room for sequels. It diverges from the written material in that they're walking to alternate pasts and dimensions here. The webserial focused much more on the supernatural, describing the its inhabitants as having the temperament of coked up inmates in solitary who've been left to boredom for thousands of years. Their malevolence stemmed from insanity. I'm not sure how I feel about the "Time Cop" kind of deal going on in the film.
