Snowpiercer - Yay! Netflix
Article and Trailer.
Some big names and an interesting concept. I look forward to hearing the bad science behind why they're trapped in a train.

“Activism is a way for useless people to feel important, even if the consequences of their activism are counterproductive for those they claim to be helping and damaging to the fabric of society as a whole.” - Dr Thomas Sowell
The film is set in a future where a runaway experiment to stop global warming has caused an ice age that killed nearly all life on the planet. The only survivors are the inhabitants of the 'Snowpiercer', a massive train that travels around the planet and is powered by a perpetual-motion engine.
Yeah, don't expect anything coherent or sensible on that front. It sounds like it's going to be exceptionally stupid in the scientific plausibility department. If I had to guess, something about their perpetual motion engine means it has to be in motion to keep producing power, so to keep it moving and providing power for people to live they all have to be strapped to it in this train. Or maybe it only works in sunlight or the night side of earth is so cold everyone will die, so the train has to spend all the time racing against the sunset. One of those two things. Either way, dumb.
Thisis also probably relevant.

A circular railway that extends for 438,000km and completes one circle every year.
The circle goes around the edges of the world's continents in a loop with both east and west sections, and a lot of north and south as well. So much for the outracing-the-sunset possibility.

According to Rayns, Bong said the cuts would eliminate much of the character detail, which would make the film seem more like an action movie. Weinstein is also adding opening and closing voice-overs.
I must have just watched the unedited version then, because there weren't any voice-overs.
This is a pretty damned good movie. It isn't about the train, it is about the people on the train, so if you can just get over yourself and accept the train is the way it is, you can enjoy this movie. Besides, the train isn't eternal, if that helps. That is made clear.
There are parts that are damned near surreal.... I don't want to discuss any of the really creative moments. If anyone else sees it start a spoiler thread.

I heard the director would not agree to the cuts which is why distribution sucked in the U.S. in spite of it making mad bank in the rest of the world. Netflix has the correct, full version of the movie.GORDON wrote:TPRJones wrote:Thisis also probably relevant.I must have just watched the unedited version then, because there weren't any voice-overs.According to Rayns, Bong said the cuts would eliminate much of the character detail, which would make the film seem more like an action movie. I was reading some dude's list of films you "must" see and Snowpiercer was on it. In the space where he was describing it he also said something about Contact, "One of his all time favorite films".
Then I thought about this:
And I laughed.
It's on my list of things to see this week. I'm looking forward to it. I'm trying to go into it already hating it just to spite Gordo and the dipshit that liked Contact. However, that should increase the chances I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Not sure if I agree yet, just saying I have seen the comparison discussed.Malcolm wrote:Goddamn you. May have to watch this now.GORDON wrote:I've seen comparisons of this movie to Gilliam's Brazil.
I want to watch it again but goddam the "To Watch" queue is so deep it is hard to rewatch something when there is so much new shit to watch.
Wife is going on vacation with the kid in February, with the kid, for a week. I am looking forward to some serious movie/pizza/jerkatorium time.

The 2nd 3rd of the movie is much better than the 1st third, though it feels like it's building towards an obvious conclusion.
I was just trying to find out IF THE MOVIE GOT BETTER THAN THE SHITACULAR FIRST THIRD OF THE MOVIE. I just wanted a freaking answer.
