Archie Andrews Dead

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

He will die saving a gay friend.

This is for the "Life with Archie" continuity. That series saw him marry Betty in one version and Veronica in the other. It's a very adult series that some people love, and others hated.

So the author is making a statement about gay rights, and gun control. If we can add in a global warming element and universal health care, he could cover even more bases.

Archie has always been a Flanders.

Archie gets shot by a mentally unstable man who couldn't afford mental health care while defending his best friend who is gay while they are at a protest to stop the Keystone Pipeline.

There, have him write that.

His friend needs a gay puppy.

I was trying to think of a PETA angle but nothing came to me.

My understanding is that the gay friend is in town to push for stricter gun control.

If Archie had a CC permit he might still be alive.

Stupid commie.

I've started using the response, when some wacko shoots someone, "But how many people did the other 50 million registered gun owners in the USA shoot yesterday?"

Archie has always been a hippie, but they've had reality bitch slap him a few times. Like Mr. Lodge's big corporation was sometimes in the right. There was a balance.

And maybe it's still there, and this particular story just happens to be written by a die hard left wing nut job, but to me, him saving a gay person just seems like a stunt, not a forwarding of a social awareness. Having the guy also be a veteran and a gun control activist is dreamworld ridiculous. It actually makes the death less meaningful. You're just doing this to try and further your political beliefs, not tell a good story, and it's very transparent.

It's identity politics. That trumps good story telling (apparently)

Agreed. You won't find me defending this likely dreck writing.

It might be different if homosexuals were as common in the Archieverse as they are in reality, but apparently this is the only gay character in the comic we are talking about. Pure stunt.

How about a gay character that's an avid hunter? Or goes to the firing range regularly? I watched the first (and only) season of Rubicon on whichever network it was on. The main character's boss was gay and very non-typical gay. Made him an interesting character. And he was pretty much a bad ass.

I wish Rock Hudson was around today. He'd launch one-man raids on the WBC.

I predict about 10% of NFL, NBA, etc will be coming out of the closet over the next couple of decades, and the Rock Hudson type of gay will make a comeback.

I'd be surprised to see it. I just don't think we have that high a percent of gay population. And sadly, stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason. For every one gay pro athlete there are probably 10 hair dressers, interior decorators and florists.

I think we do. Well, sort of. More accurate to say that I think the number of people that have homosexual tendencies (say above about the 10% gay threshold) is more than that high - probably in the neighborhood of 15% of men and 25% of women. People that are 100% homosexual are probably less common than people that have strong bisexual tendencies. But even though society is now more accepting of homosexuality, in general it seems to insist that bisexuals have to "pick a team already," so it'll be a bit longer before that sort of thing gets to be easier to measure.

My base line is that 10% of the population, minimum, is such that you'd call them homosexual. Once you start factoring the entire homo<->hetero spectrum, I could see that number go up to 15% easy, and more than that if we focus exclusively on women. That's a significant minority and it all depends how you draw that spectrum up.

Yeah.... I'd say way less than 5%, nationwide. We're just supposed to think there are more.
