I don't think Gold does much. You can get discounts with their partner stores. It's mostly just a way to support Reddit.
Some people buy Reddit Gold in volume, and give it away. A single one month membership costs $3.99 per, but if you buy enough in bulk they are $2.50 per month.

If someone liked your post he can guild it with gold. That marks your post as special (so others are more likely to read it) and gives you a month of Reddit Gold.

I don't know if you can regift it.

I made the 2nd page of reddit today.

I think I've submitted about 8 links. 4 of which were rust related. the other 4 were advice animals.

Those 7 other links combined got 20 link karma. Now I'm above 400.

Being President of the USA is only 1 in 10 million, but winning a gold medal is 1 in 23.4 million?

There is only one President of the United States, but 302 gold medals were given out at the last Summer Olympics.
