That sucks, I thought it was a pretty good show. Although, I think I'm only up to Season 3.

Do they just randomly kill shows now? How the fuck do they determine what stays on? They must be trying to emulate Fox's past couple decades of "wtf" decisions.

Finished the final season this weekend, and overall, I loved this show.
That being said, I can understand why it was cancelled, and it reminds me of many other, similarly paced shows, that end for the same reason...

What's the deal with the rushed and ever evolving story lines in shows like Eureka?
The first two (or three?) seasons were perfect. Guy becomes sheriff of a secret town run by the government that houses the smartest people on the planet. It's a good formula. Episodes were entertaining, and you began to develop a sense of the cast and their relationships.
As soon as you begin to settle into the town yourself, and vest yourself in following these people, the writers completely flip the script. Time traveling begins, people are permanently changed, events that occurred no longer happened or had alternate outcomes, alternate versions of people replace themselves, virtual people and worlds are visited and lived within, etc.
It all becomes a big convoluted mess. The entire fourth season needed a new opening clip just to explain what was going on. It reminded me of seeing Dune in the theaters and being handed crib notes to brief you on the back story.
Say you loved Eureka and for some reason you stop watching around the end of season two, but try to jump back in at the beginning of season 5. Now you have to figure out that the Deputy Lupo you're seeing isn't the original Deputy Lupo, but it is, but she's also in a different timeline, and she's talking to Holly, but that's not the real Holly because Holly's dead, but that's a construct made from the real Holly's brain, and Deputy Lupo's boyfriend is the same guy, but not the original guy, and holy shit when did this lovable "USA-like" show (trademark TheCatt) become so terribly written?
Such a mess is hard enough for a normal audience to follow, let alone a casual one. That's why your ratings plunged!!!
I recommend this show simply because you will not believe how much shit they stuff in 5 seasons (some were even shortened!), and how off track they get in a short amount of time.
It pisses one off because this show had so much potential. It's a great idea gone terribly wrong thanks to overzealous writers.
Look at a show like Psych or Monk (Damn you Catt!) or how about Star Trek: The Next Generation... These shows set the premise, and then didn't stray too far from it, and they were all successful. There was a formula in place, and they didn't stray too far from it. Sure, there was a "master" story line in place that drove the shows, but none evolved it too quickly until the end.
That's where shows like Eureka fail. They need to stop and smell the roses, not rush into the next big shake up.
I'm a writer, and I think the writer is the most unappreciated job in all of entertainment, but Eureka lasted 5 seasons in spite of its writers.
Here's hoping that someday someone resurrects the concept, and does it justice.

Typically this happens when a show makes big changes to the writing staff. Suddenly the new guy(s) have to make a name for themselves, have to change everything so that they can feel like they've contributed.

Huh. I had the opposite response. He makes a perfect Maytag man, IMO, and it was nice to see him again.
But then I just realized although I keep seeing him in lots of different shows, it's probably not shows you guys are watching so for you he's probably been missing since Eureka.
