So I was reading this article, which is very pro tipping, and it got me to thinking about tipping overall.

Customer service has dropped in this country, yet tipping standards have gone up? WTF?

Remember when 15% was standard? Now according to that article, it's a poor tip. Even if your service was bad!

One thing that article did mention, that I honestly never thought about, is that tipping is an American thing. Not exclusive, but we're the kings of tipping. So I looked for an alternative view, and found an article talking about how tipping needs to go away.

Here's a restaurant that actually did it, and their results.

It actually amazes me that nobody in the government has thought about ending tipping. Think about it. Everyone knows that people who get tipped in their jobs don't report ALL their tips. Making these folks salary, and ending tips means more reported income. That means more tax money.

Tipping? Isn't that a city in China?

Wait, in example #1, why is a $5 tip undertipping for 286 seconds of work? That's less than 5 minutes. That's $1/minute? I mean, I typically tip $1/drink, but still. someone's complaining about making $60/hour?

I don't get the waiter tipping. I'm firmly in 15% = average, 20%+ = good/great. 10% = bad. 0% = awful. You know what? If the person doesn't get enough tips to make minimum wage A) By law, the restaurant has to make it up and B) That person should make better life choices. I would say I generally get good service though, and tip around 17.5%.

I used to be a pizza delivery person (briefly) in college. Admittedly, people had about no standards. But you could rely upon minorities and foreigners being the worst tippers (often no tip). People who were ordering from work were the best tippers.

I typically do 10% on pizza deliveries, rounded up. So a $15-17 order ends up at $2. If I order a crapload of items, I'll tip up to $1/item.

Different demographics absolutely do tip differently

No shit. Someone needed a study for that?

Apparently no one tips flight attendants, and if you do, you’ll probably receive free drinks thereafter.

I believe the rules oblige them to refuse 2-3 times.

Celebrities known to tip well (these are the names that come up again and again in articles about this): Johnny Depp, Charles Barkley, David Letterman, Bill Murray, Charlie Sheen, Drew Barrymore

Celebrities known to tip badly: Tiger Woods, Mariah Carey, LeBron James, Heidi Klum, Bill Cosby, Madonna, Barbara Streisand, Rachael Ray, Sean Penn, Usher

Interesting, vaguely. I'm also kind of surprised Barkley's in the "good" category. He alternates between being ok and being a dick.

I noticed there's no entry in the "very bad" section for "the entirety of Scotland." There fucking should be. At the couple places in my hood where I'm considered a regular, I tip quite well when the service is competent. It tends to encourage the alcohol to flow with fewer impediments.

Heh... I've always tipped the pizza guy more than wait persons. I think I've just always felt like the pizza guy does more to get my food to me than the waiter/waitress. Plus pizza guys are regularly held up at gun point, so I guess I just appreciate them more. Plus they deal with crappy traffic so I don't have to.
