I don't get this one.

Professor tells volleyball player that if she misses another class, she fails.

This is a student athlete that's in school on a scholarship. All of her absences were excused by the school's athletic director.

Yet the school won't tell the professor to stand down? I don't get it. Why offer the girl a scholarship if you don't want her playing?

Seems the biology prof is being an asshole but that's not necessarily breaking a rule. The real catch 22 would be her losing the scholarship if she didn't play.

I think it's on the school to defend the student, and they aren't. They're trying to avoid taking a stand by giving the girl a hectic travel schedule.

If I'm an athlete contemplating them, it would make me look to another school.

Your education is of utmost importance, but that doesn't mean you can't do other things. If this girl is getting it done in terms of homework and tests, then the professor can go fuck him or herself.

Attendance may or may not be a part of passing a course at the discretion of the instructor according to every place I've taught or been taught.

If I'm an athlete contemplating them, it would make me look to another school.

That'll probably be the end result. Some schools do not give much of a fuck about their athletics.

Which is absolutely fine, but don't offer scholarships for athletes.

I'm not really sure if she's hot enough for me to care.

It may be a legal thing.

Here the athletic director sends out emails to faculty with the names of athletes headed to events and a request to excuse their absence and allow for make-up work as reasonable. And faculty comply with that as far as I know, but it would be against state law to require the faculty to comply with that. If an instructor made a fuss they could fail the students for excessive absences and in theory the school can't say boo. In actual practice that faculty would probably not have any more classes to teach after that term for "unrelated reasons", but we couldn't do a thing for the students caught in the crossfire in the meantime.

Except that once the term is over the Dean could review their coursework and adjust their grade if they deem it appropriate, but that would be something done quietly after the media has gone away.

Your explanation and theory just made the story 10x more interesting to me.

What angle is the professor trying to play?

The douchebag angle. Some teachers are just control freaks who flunked out of the police academy and every other employment opportunity that gave them even a bit of power.
