Background:
You'll know three names from this, maybe. It's a black comedy directed by William Friedkin (of Exorcist fame), and Matthew "I Suck Donkey Ass" McConaughey playing the title character, "Killer" Joe Cooper, cop by day and hitman by night. Thomas Hayden Church is a supporting cast member and portrays the most spineless character I've seen in a long while.
Theme:
The entire flick is making fun of trailer trash. Imagine the most fucked up Springer episode you've ever seen and up the ante with Gina Gershon's snatch in the first five minutes. By the end, she's blowing a KFC chicken piece. Nothing in that last sentence was a typo.
Is there some comedy in here? Yeah. But it's also NC-17 for titties, beavers, implied incest, sister pimping, and they don't spare the blood and bruises in the makeup department.
Synopsis:
A hick decides to kill his mom after she fucks him over on a coke deal. He enlists the help of his mom's boyfriend, his dad, his dad's current wife (dad divorced his mom), his sister, and a hitman recommended by his mom's boyfriend. The idea is they'll collect on the insurance money. The plot starts getting complex when the dumb-asses realize they don't have the kill fee up front, which is one of Joe's rules.
Review:
Just what the fuck? There are zero sympathetic characters in here. Even the one they put in an "innocent" light is 100% supportive of the murder plot from the beginning. The one dude that decides to renege still has all kinds of asshole marks against him by that time.
The donkey ass sucker does command some presence but he doesn't steal the movie because his character is easily the biggest douche of all.
The ending is ... I don't even know. I get that they made this based off a play, but a bit of closure would've made things more interesting.
Verdict:
Check it once, runs about 100 minutes. It's not awesome, but it's not horrible. Very "eh" average feel.
