What's your salary?
Small movement to make "open salary" policies everywhere.
In other words, everyone would know everyone else's salary.
Yeah, because that's an awesome idea. Everyone knows what an IT professional does and why they make the money they do right? I'm sure the guy in the loading shed will totally understand why an accountant makes that much more than he does.
Stupid fucking idea.

Talking salaries seem taboo, and I'm always in favour of removing such things. But I do see a few problems that would occur.
You plan to sidestep economic realities with all your workers? If you give someone on the lower rung hard numbers regarding what it's like a few notches up, isn't that some form of motivation? It's not like the dudes loading the trucks are under the illusion they're the top earners.

Excellent point and that's one way to look at it.Malcolm wrote:If you give someone on the lower rung hard numbers regarding what it's like a few notches up, isn't that some form of motivation? It's not like the dudes loading the trucks are under the illusion they're the top earners.
Here's another...
Look at the current state of our "What can my country do for me?" society. Is it more likely these folks get more motivated or just pissed off and refuse to work over how "unfair" the salaries are?
Personally, if you can't look at hot women, good food, big houses, boats, vacation spots, nice cars, etc. and get motivated, then what will some numbers do?
I think the negatives outweigh the positives. Granted, it might prevent some people at the same level from getting fucked over, but let's be honest, there are ways around salary figures.

You could make more if you tried. But, as I understand it, you don't care.TPRJones wrote:Meh, there are just as many good points about it as there are bad points, IMO.
I just broke $50,000 yearly myself. Of course that's before taxes and insurance and every damn thing else.
Which means... for people who don't care, this is a fine idea. For most people though, I just see can of worms.
It's not me, it's someone else.
Pretty much. Mostly I just like the time off (school holidays ftw) and surfing the web all day instead of doing work.TheCatt wrote:You could make more if you tried. But, as I understand it, you don't care.
I am certainly not complaining.

I doubt there would be quite as much resentment and anger as y'all think. The vast majority of those people already know those other people are making more than they are. If anything some of them might be surprised to see it's not as much more as they assumed it was.

I've seen accountants and HR people who were resentful of how much a new IT guy made.
I once knew a P/A at the same level as me with years more experience get pissed when he found out I made a lot more.... after I was recruited to that company from out of state.
I can see both sides of it, but I think generally ignorance is bliss.
