The recent "furloughing" of "non essential" government workers has me wondering... why the fuck do we let them keep drawing a paycheck if they are not essential? Which leads me to wonder... exactly how much of the government is bullshit?

My personal guess.... about 30% of the budget is going to things the feds should be running, and the rest of it is pork, or straight up illicit shit that lines the pockets of lawmakers. There is a reason the counties surrounding Washington DC are among the richest in the nation.

I think 10% is being too generous.

I don't know that we NEED an army bigger than the next 5 biggest armies combined, but that, at least, is a Constitutionally allowed expenditure of treasure. That is something like 40% of the budget, if I recall. And yeah, I bet 5% of that is wasteful lining of pockets.

95-99% of what every administration does is just getting it and its supporters reelected and entrenched in power as long as possible, including those sweet, sweet defense contracts that I'm sure are totally above the board. The remaining percentage 1-5% goes to half-assing running the country because the US gov't only consists of two equally dismal, incompetent, blind, blithering, mummy dick sucking, greedy, small-minded, powertripping bands of people who fund their insane delusions of the "greater good" by espousing their pandering political ideologies to the lowest common denominator of the voting public. They can do this because walking into a voting booth drops the IQ of the average adult by somewhere around 100 points and there is no third, forth, or fifth party threat. The US gov't is isolated from the idiocy of its own decisions, which is why members of Congress still got paid during the "shutdown."

Oddly enough, I wrote that before watching this, which echoes much of the same sentiment, albeit in a third-hand Jimmy Stewart sort of way.
