I enjoyed the way the second movie mirrored the original second movie (like the universe knows the timeline is messed up and is trying to push events back on track but failing and everything is similar but still very wrong ... but I digress). But I don't see how the third could mirror the original third at this point. No dead Spock, no Genesis project, no angry Klingons, etc.

Three could be a take off on the whales, but I think it's too soon to use that much comedy.

If they have to mimic a movie, let it be 6.

It makes sense to do a peace treaty with the Klingons at this point in their history.

OR...

And I know this will be unpopular, but if JJ really is directing...bring on the Borg...

If they go with whale probe they'll have to come up with a reason it arrived 15 years too early.

But I can see them doing whale probe, but redone as a more serious threat and no comedy time travel.

Ooo, borg, good idea. Borg time streams are such a mess that they don't even really have to explain the early arrival, we can just assume some future borg incident with the new Starfleet resulted in a borg time ship going back and nudging them along to Earth space sooner.

Although the last movie ended with them headed out on a five-year mission, so really they can take it anywhere at this point.

My guess is... the Whale Probe will accidentally and comically be destroyed just to get it addressed and out of the way.

"What did we just hit?"

"I dunno, we'll collect a sample to analyze later. On with the mission!"

The wormhole that brought Nemoy changed the Whale Probe's trajectory so it crashed into V-ger and they were both destroyed.
