I don't think it was climate change so much as an unexplained event. Climate change, even in the worst scenarios, isn't going to cause a 2012 disaster scene.
I thought it had more to do with the shifting tectonic plates.

Considering he was the ONLY guy not related to them in the movie, I'd say he wasn't just the one the pisses off daddy the most, but also the one dad likes the best.
And honestly, the message behind this film is about the bond between a father and daughter, not about what boy she falls in love with.

That last bit is probably why I enjoyed it more than you.
I found it to be better than Wreck it Ralph. I liked WiR, but I thought it was probably one of the most overrated films of 2012.
