Honestly, though, it's that they've apparently decided to 1) push up the speed of development cycle so they can sell more copies more often to more people, and 2) completely redo the whole thing in a new way from the ground up. Those two goals do not go together without a lot of expensive competence and nimble management that they don't poses.

I bought my oldest daughter a laptop for her 6th birthday. It's a touch laptop with Windows 8 installed.
So far I've spent an hour with it trying to configure it for a kid (put in a few simple games, painting programs, remove bad stuff, etc). I wanted to punch it about 3 times.
The touch interface works pretty well for most of it, but the dumbing down gets frustrating when used to doing things other ways. The biggest change is they removed a lot of complexity. So things you're used to seeing and working with are just gone or hard to find.
I have a feeling it will be good for a kid, but it's pretty frustrating for me.

The desktop portion is still outstanding, but the tablet side...the "tiles"... is less than what it should be at the moment.

Right now, if I was just comparing the OSs of the Surface and the iPad, and excluding the desktop mode which is KEY, I'd give the nod in intuitiveness to the iPad.

Windows 8 has no business being on normal PCs and laptops. It is simply not made for them. The primary focus of the OS is its tablet features, so why put it on desktops and laptops? Dumb.
Microsoft would have been wise to leave Windows 7 alone and call Windows 8, "Windows Tablet" or something like that.

Well, one of the tiles on that "tablet" screen is one that says "Desktop".
If you hit it, it goes to a traditional desktop, although it does NOT have a traditional Start button.
Windows 8 is honestly not horrible. Everyone I've given a Surface to, LOVES it. Not likes, LOVES. (Of course, these are business users, not people who just want to play Fruit Ninja and watch Netflix.)
Again, the problem with Windows 8 is that they designed it for tablets, and the desktop users are an after thought.
I think Microsoft would be wise to rebrand it as Windows Tablet, and give out free copies of W7 to people who want to downgrade their PCs/laptops.
