Rise of the Planet of the Apes

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

I saw that the trailer was out but I was so disgusted with Tim Burton's flick that it soured me on the entire franchise and I didn't even want to watch it.

So, they'd better have a hell of a good explanation for a couple score apes outliving humans.

Kevin Smith joked that it should have been called "Planet of the Apes: The Apology". (He's not best friends with Burton.)

It occurred to me that a really cool touch would be to open the film with this film's stars interacting, while in the background or something, we see the launch of the rocket with the stars for the inevitable sequel (and remake of the original).

That would be a really cool touch.

Buzz is good.
Devin Faraci of Badass Digest added the following: “What’s great about APES: the apes. They work, completely and totally. They are the heart and life of the film.”

Alex Billington of First Showing tweeted that “Ohh yes it’s true, Rise of the Planet of the Apes may just be the best movie of the summer. Loved it so much. Andy Serkis is so amazing!”

Nordling from Ain’t It Cool News got pretty emotional: “I’ll admit, I cried like 4 times in RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. I have no shame. Shit choked me up.”

Matt Patches of Hollywood.com told a follower that: “Rise of the Planet of the Apes is actually great”

James Rocchi of MSN is cryptic, but positive by tweeting: “PARADISE LOST + A PROPHET + PROJECT NIM + THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS + San Francisco’s deserved destruction = Damn Good Trash”

And Drew McWeeney of HitFix calls it “a smart and grown-up science-fiction thriller that honors the name it carries.”

I see the commercials, and all I see are cartoon monkeys.
To me it looks like rough draft footage.

I have no desire to watch it.

Saw it.

I had heard a lot of buzz about the film, and it was all positive. Thus, I was pretty geeked to see it.

Ok, so here's your warning: This film is PG-13. I repeat, it's PG-13. Go watch that trailer again, and keep that in mind. See the problem yet? This is something that I never even thought about before going to the theater.

If you still don't get it, the easiest, non-spoiler way to put this is to say that this is not the film that the trailer implies...

Honestly, I was pretty bored, but interested, through most of the film and kept waiting for the action. However, once I got through the whole film, and saw the ending, which oddly occurs after the credits have started, everything falls together well. Well enough that I forgave the slow pace of the film.

For Paul, the CGI is good at times, but bad at times. Although, it's miles ahead of the rubber masks worn in the original films. Speaking of the originals, there are some nods to the original films, including what I'm pretty sure what Heston's voice. Plus, they sprinkled hints to the sequel throughout, which will be the plot of the original film.

Overall, it's a well told story, and they even fit in a running joke in the form of the neighbor. Everyone I know enjoyed it, and my wife liked it, but I was torn. I thought it was a very entertaining film and a very solid first step back into this franchise, but I was disappointed that there wasn't as much action as the trailer implies.

I'd give it a 7 out of 10. If I wasn't fooled by the trailer, it might be higher. Probably 8.

Where do you think you heard Heston's voice?

It was better than I thought it would be. I commented earlier, "How were a couple score apes going to outlive humans?" and I feel the film gave a satisfying answer to that.

Also, Leisher got his "have a rocket blast off to set up the sequel" wish, which I liked.

All in all, just SO much better than the Burton version a decade ago. They should collect all existing film reels of that piece of shit, put it all in a pile, bound and gag Burton, throw him on top of the pile, and light that fucker. This ensures his asstastic movie is never seen again, and the idiotic mind that created it is gone.

I honestly cannot recall where I thought I heard Heston's voice in a movie from a year and a half ago, so I googled it...
2. Famous Lines (of the Apes)
If some of the dialogue in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” sounded familiar, there’s a reason for that. Several of the big zingers are taken from the 1968 “Planet of the Apes.” Listen carefully for Dodge to shout “It’s a madhouse!” during one moment of ape rebellion: that’s an echo of an identical exclamation by Chuck Heston when some apes spray him with a fire hose (more on that later). Dodge also gets the honor of reciting one of Heston’s most iconic lines, when he yells “Take your stinking paws off me you damn dirty ape!” after Caesar confronts him in a hand-to-paw fight.

In response, Caesar screams “NO!” — his first words — and smacks Dodge in the face. This might be a stretch but Caesar’s “NO!” reminds me of the repeated uses of the same word in “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes,” where apes are trained to be slaves in a dystopian future, and are conditioned with electroshock therapy to fear and hate when a human says the words no.

5. Charlton Heston (of the Apes)
The man, the myth, the grumpy, sweaty, intensely-tanned, loincloth-wearing legend makes a very brief cameo, on a television screen at the ape sanctuary. Regrettably, no one says they’ll only change the channel when they pry the remote control their cold, dead hands.

As for Burton, when he's doing niche films that are horror themed, but involving quirky, heart warming characters, he's fantastic. When he's doing anything else, he's complete garbage. I think Hollywood has finally figured that out.
