In NC you pay a fee for renewing your tags every year... and if I recall, it was a reasonable price...40-ish, but then you got slapped for a luxury tax for the car you registered, according to its bluebook value. That was hundreds, usually.

I can't recall if that was just a county tax, or not. It may have been.
