id's latest effort hit shelves Tuesday, and was apparently pretty damn buggy.

Very unusual for an id game.

It's still getting decent reviews. They're probably giving it a bit of a pass because it's id.

Here's the first 10 minutes of the game if you're curious.

A review worthy of Rage:

Holy shit this game is gorgeous! Pretty fun too. The guns work great, and shooting them is satisfying. However, the plot seems...light. In fact, the whole game seems to be missing huge chunks of content. Seriously though, it's so damn beautiful. Weird, it seems like the game is heading for the ending, but that can't be right, Practicaly no story has been told and this would be the 25% point for Borderlands. I haven't even laid eyes on the main villain!!! Nope, the end.

Long story short, I remember when id was THE name in FPS games, and now they make a pretty game, but it's honestly just a tech demo.

A solid buy at $5 on Steam, but anything more and you'll feel cheated.

More detail when I have time.

Quake 3 was nothing but tech demo, it didnt even pretend to have a single player game. John Carmack is always looking to develop the next popular fps engine... i think they make more from licensing it than they do selling it directly to gamers.

Bought the box for like $5 on amazon, and this was the "Anarchy Edition." Not sure what addition content that entails. I know that I got to choose between the regular version and the 64 bit "with mods" version when I launched it.

Anyway, at first I was sort of disgusted by the fact my tool hints were all geared toward using a gamepad. "You have found grenades, these are quick hit items and can be activated by hitting the RB button." After a few minutes of that I went into controls and found the gamepad enabled by default. What the hell. Once I deactivated I started getting good info.

As Leisher says, very pretty. Hit one little bug, but it fixed itself when I went back and through the door again. Will let you know if that happens again. Also, the load screens from zone to zone take about 5 times longer than those in Borderlands. Another misstep. Makes John Carmack's leaving of id a little easier to understand.... one gets the feeling he is no longer in charge of quality control.
