Area 51 is always going to be my pet peeve. It's a fucking test site, not a damn UFO hiding place.
I want to choke morons who go on and on about government conspiracies and how secret Area 51 is..."They won't let you get near that place!"
No shit Einstein?!? Maybe it's because it's a fucking military facility and you have no business going onto it? Maybe it's because of all the equipment, weapons, and ammo laying around? You ever think it might be smart of the military not to let any civilian walk onto the base there and start fucking with stuff?
And seriously, if it's that big of a secret, why is it mentioned in damn near every piece of Science Fiction ever created? Why can more people find it on a map than Maryland (I might have made that stat up...).
And yes, Ohio. Nothing I'm about to say is not public knowledge...Wright-Patterson Air Force base is the R&D base. It's where "Hanger 18" is located. If you had a UFO and/or aliens, that's where you'd take them.

"Be bold, and mighty forces will come to your aid."
Can anyone get a clear shot of that image in the credits? It's at 2:16-2:17.

I don't know how I feel about this film. When I saw the teaser trailer I thought this was going to be another Cloverfield, only without the shitty cameras.
Now I'm getting a "ET re-imagined" vibe...

There will be spoilers below...unless you saw ET...then you're good to continue reading.
I was right.
A while ago James Cameron made a fantastic movie called Aliens. Years later, he ran out of ideas, but he had the technology to make a movie look great, so he made Aliens again and called it Avatar.
Super 8 is nothing more than ET with better effects.
All the same themes are there:
-Alien wants to go home.
-Kids are the heroes.
-Adults are clueless.
-The government is mean.
Still, this movie is worth seeing because of the kids. The main character's dad does a really good job too, but the kids are the real stars here. Their sub-plot of making a movie is entertaining, and Elle Fanning steals the show. Seriously, what's with the Fannings? Their kids can act their asses off.
The alien? Well, let's just say that he's closer to the Cloverfield monster than ET. You barely see him, and when you do, it's a disappointment.
Stick around for the credits to see the kids' film.
5 out of 10. (Thought about giving it 6 or even 7, but this is essentially a rehashing of an idea Spielberg had two decades ago, so...)
