Kick Ass

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

The Movie

Kick Ass is about a teen living in the real world who grows up a fan of comics. He lives in a shitty neighborhood and decides to don the tights and fight crime.

The comic is fucking BRUTAL. I cannot stress that enough. Imagine a teen running out with no training and fighting a street gang. The results are exactly what you expect.

The odd thing is that Kick Ass is only up to issue 5 or so and it's already being made into a movie. I have no idea what that means in terms of potential quality.

With John Romita Jr. being attached to it and how hot comics are on film right now, I'd imagine they pitched the idea and sold it before they ever started the comic.

I remember the first Swamp Thing movie was given the green light within less than a year of the series being resurrected. By the time it came out or there abouts Moore had gotten hold of the series and completely changed it (for the better), so the movie had little to do with the comic at that point.

My memory might be off, but I know it wasn't far from the time the comic shifted gears.

I actually didn't mind the Swamp Thing movie.

I didn't either, it was just worlds away from what Swamp Thing had become.

They sold it right after the first comic was finished.

My cousin saw a preview last Thursday night (He's a critic...not really, but he is...it's a film thing.) and he said the entire theater gave it a standing ovation when it ended. He claims it's the most entertaining film he's seen in years.

To counter that, msn.com's critic gave it 1 and a half stars out of 5 today. Of course, the 11 user reviews rated it at 4 and a half stars...

I've read the story, and it is entertaining. Unrealistic and over-the-top in both violence and gore, but entertaining.

Found it enjoyable.

Good flick. Some Kill Bill-level violence.

Almost.

I liked it. Some of the best action scene filming I've seen. Awesome shoot-outs, etc. Can't say enough how good the action scenes were.

The ending. Ugh. Really got lazy and dropped the ball. Granted, the action scenes were over the top, but still within physical possibilities. But Kick Asses part at the end? Dumb. Weak. VERY disappointed. This was supposed to be "What if in real life. . ." What he had doesn't exist.

I still liked it a lot and am glad I have it. Will watch it again just for those kick ass shooting scenes. But that ending. Blah. REALLY dropped the ball.

I was okay with it. Sure, something like that isn't on the market now, but it's not inconceivable given modern tech. Definitely "Hollywooded up", but not so completely far fetched as to make it completely impossible. IMO.

Theory I heard was that everything that happened after the torture scene... was all played out in Kick-Ass's head the moment before he got a bullet in the brain.

That would've been a far, far better ending than what I saw. Flick was watchable, started off semi-interesting & takes a permanent turn downhill about halfway through.

FYI: Kick Ass 2 hit book shelves last week.

Same protagonist.

I finally watched this last night and I find some of your comments interesting.

First to Gordon, not sure who came up with that theory, but I'm curious as to how they'd come up with a theory like that as the movie is based on an existing property that is ongoing...

On top of that, and this really relates to everything Cake and Malcolm said, around halfway through the film Hollywood took over the plot and went away from everything in the book.

Spoilers
Here's what was different:
-when he told the girl he was straight, she kicked him in the balls and hated him. She also had her boyfriend kick his ass and later texted him a picture of her sucking her boyfriend's dick. I don't even think she's in part 2.
-big daddy died in the book thanks to a shotgun to the back of the head at point blank range. Oh, and he wasn't a cop, he said he was, but he was really just an accountant. He was simply a fan of comics who wanted to make his daughter special.
-no jetpack, no miniguns, no bazooka
-hit girl is pretty much the same
-no televised torture
-the crime boss thought kick ass was a joke and knew big daddy and hit girl were the real threats. He also wasn't a big Kung Fu master

The film ended the same way as volume 1 though with red mist saying that line.

-hit girl was the most accurate character
-there was no bazooka or jet pack with mini guns
-the warehouse scene never happened. Ka and rm did pass a fire but it was a house fire and ka had to talk rm into helping by calling 911.
-the televised thing never happened

This movie was fun, I really enjoyed it. I don't read comics, so lack of authenticity doesn't bother me. I got the Hollywood ending vibe as well, but all movies do that (worst example: Tropic Thunder; brilliant movie, then has to get all "oh yeah, we have to resolve the plot" No, just entertain me.).

Nicholas Cage in a good role for the first time in forever. I didn't really care the much of the main character, honestly. And this stuff at the end, same issues as some of the above. But Hit Girl was a bad ass, and her story + Big Daddy's was the most compelling.
It's not me, it's someone else.
