Survival of the Dead

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

The latest zombie film by George Romero.

Gordon and I were discussing this over the weekend and he said he heard that Romero's films were getting worse each time. I can't argue with that statement.

This film is terrible. There is simply no point or logic to the story at all. It's just a bunch of characters acting randomly.

The story starts off with a "Hatfields vs. McCoys" situation on some island. The Hatfields want to kill the zombies. The McCoys want to save them until someone finds a cure. We then get taken to a small group of military folk who go AWOL because they don't buy into the military's efforts to save humanity. So they become bandits robbing anyone they can. Then they wind up getting a huge amount of cash, and it becomes a plot device despite society having completely collapsed and money being useless...

Anyway, guess where the army folks end up. That's right, the island with the feuding families. Here's where the story gets REALLY bad. Contradiction after contradiction. Stupid character moment after stupid character moment.

In fact, if Romero didn't add all the stupid character moments and contradictions, the plot couldn't move forward.

Here's some examples if you're curious (SPOILERS):
-A zombie girl rides a horse throughout the film. However, towards the end the leader of the McCoys sticks that same horse into a pen with her in an attempt to prove that you can teach the zombies not to eat people, and thus, humans shouldn't be killing them. (No idea how that proves it.) Anyway, after biting her sister (effectively killing her) and after not going after the horse for the entire 20 minute scene, she finally takes a bite. A bite of the horse she's been riding the whole movie...
-Group A and group B face off with guns. Group A lays down their weapons. 5 minutes later a woman starts handing them their guns backs in full view of Group B who sit there doing nothing despite knowing they're going to end up in a gun battle. (The scene is even worse than that, but that's the best way I can describe it.)

Trust me, I could go on and on, but I'm wasting too much time on this turd. I think I spent more time writing this post than Romero did on the plot.

Not a single redeeming thing. If someone offers you the movie for free, don't take it.

0 out of 10.
