I cannot finish this book. I've stuck with every other Heinlein book I've ever picked up, even when he insists on abusing the reader like in Glory Road and The Cat Who Walks Through Walls, but those books have readable characters right up until the endings.
But as soon as Jubal Harshaw dropped out of this book, so did my interest. Here's a terrible idea, let's follow the two least compelling, least developed characters as they go off on their own and have shenanigans (in bed).
To be fair, I picked up the uncut version. If the cut version chops off the last 30% of the book I'm sure it's much better.
Stranger in a Strange Land - aka "Grok grok grokking grok"
It doesn't, but it is much tighter.
Spoiler (minor, barely qualifies, but spoilers nonetheless)

the bit without Jubal is an interlude. He'll be back near the end. If you've gotten that far it's probably worth finishing.
