More shit continues to break. Router might have died today. Was getting weird behaviour from the router + modem combo.
My PC can connect fine to the work network so it's clean. I connected directly to the modem with no troubles. Connected modem to router, connected PC to router, no IP. I can ping the router just fine. Hit the factory reset on the router, no luck. Connected directly to modem again, no IP. Wtf? Power cycled modem, retested it, worked fine.
Then I tried a theory. Connected modem to router again, the router to PC -- no IP. Removed the router, tried to connect directly to the modem again -- no IP. Power cycled, again -- success.
In short ...
modem ... Looks ok. Fucks up when attached to router.
router ... Can ping, get to the settings utility, & edit settings of all types. Any firmware upgrades fail to find a live 'net connection. Power cycling has no noticeable effect.
Theory ... Router is fucked. Opinions?

Routers go bad, it happens. Buy a new one, and see if that doesn't resolve your issues.

I researched a lot of routers last time I bought one... about 2 months ago. I used to be a fan of DLink because I've never had a problem with the 4 or 5 DLink products I've bought, but they always had a ton of bad reviews.
Every brand has a ton of bad reviews, and a ton of people who swear by them.
In the end I just never buy anything that doesn't have at lest 4 out of 5 stars (after lots of reviews, of course) on Newegg.com.

I actually use a Netgear WNR854T. I've been using it for about 2 years, and in that time, it has only failed once. That failure being when the wireless stopped working. A quick reboot fixed it.
I liked the model so much as it was cheap, "n" compatible, had great range, was easy to configure, etc. that I've purchased more for use by employees at my company. I think we have had one that was bad, the rest are all out still being used.
I have never had a preference in this area of home computing in terms of brand name. It either works or it doesn't.
Actually, I take that back, everything with "Nortel" on it sucks.

I've owned from all of them. The only one that's been truly disappointing is my Cisco wireless router.
I use a dlink wired router as my main router, and it is pretty great. I use dlink switches for the rest of the house, and they have been great as well. And I still use that Cisco as my wireless AP only, but it kinda sucks. I keep a Linksys WRT54G as a backup router/wireless.
I've used all the major brands, they've all disappointed me with some device at some time.
It's not me, it's someone else.
