W7 released

I ordered a handful of boxed copies of W7 Pro and 2 copies of Ultimate today from PC Connection. According to my rep, they had 111 copies of Pro and 38 copies of Ultimate when I placed my order.

What are the differences between Home, Pro, and Ultimate?

Ultimate -
35 Languages
BitLocker (data protection)

Pro & Ultimate -
Automatic backup
Domain Join (a VPN feature)
Windows XP mode (Let's be honest, this is the big one)

Home, Pro, and Ultimate have all the rest.

Ultimate is pretty much the same price as Pro.

So, from home to Pro, I get XP mode. From Pro to Ultimate, I get languages and bitlocker?

So, what does XP mode get me? In other words, what's been found so far that doesn't run on 7? When would I use XP Mode?

Oh, and couldn't I just do a dual boot thing to keep XP?

No clue and I'm not going to try out every piece of software in the world to find out either.

Of course. However, most folks don't know how to do that. Plus, there's the convenience factor.

I know VNC server only runs on XP... at least last time I looked.

My video camera software wants XP.

XP Mode is XP running on an instance of shitty VirtualPC ... if you've got the proper hardware.

A new version of Virtual PC, Windows Virtual PC Beta is available for Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions. It allows multiple Windows environments, including Windows XP Mode, to run on the same machine, requiring the use of Intel VT-x or AMD-V. Windows XP Mode runs Windows XP in a virtual machine and redirects displayed applications running in Windows XP to the Windows 7 desktop.

Dual booting the machine is a million times preferable to running VirtualPC.

Pretty much everyone has Intel VT-x or AMD-V these days.
