Announced yesterday by Bioware.

Lucas just earned some points for sticking it to Sony.

Eh. I think the prequels really took the wind out of the Star Wars sails. Not to mention that with those films, animated series, and TV shows it seems like Star Wars is very overexposed right now. The real problem is that it's the shitty Star Wars that's overexposed.

I think SW had their shot. I'd much rather see a Star Trek MMO. Or better yet, Gordon and I were just talking about how a Aliens/Predators MMO could be run and kick much ass.

I have some hope for the Stargate MMO being good.

I don't know. As badly as people want KOTOR 3 getting a KOTOT MMO made by Bioware is going to be a pretty big deal. There is always the chance it could be crap but it hasn't happened yet.

I would still rather have KOTOR 3 be a single player RPG but this might actually get me to pay a monthly fee.

It's called "diluting the brand." Star Wars is nearly water, at this point.

Agreed on SW.

I liked the AvP MMO ideas we were throwing around. It could play like any other MMORPG in that everyone creates an avatar, joins guild, trains skills, works on crafts, buys and sells items, etc. In fact, it'd be cool to see player run guilds grow to become mega corporations in this universe dominated by one.

The only difference is that they'd be doing it within a universe where aliens and predators exist. In this unverse there are civilized worlds overpopulated with cities and there are outpost worlds where few humans live. You'd have the best of both worlds.

As for integrating the Aliens and Predators, Gordo had the idea that only the very top tier of humans get rewarded with becoming a Predator. I would add on the caveat that to become a Predator, a player's human must avoid becoming an Alien and do a good job in hunting them.

Meanwhile, the aliens (face huggers only) could be totally AI controlled at the beginning. Once they infect players, the player then becomes an alien where the game play completely changes for them. They now exist within the hive and they do what they must to invade human settlements.

So take Bob, John, and Henry. All three are human players who have settled on Xen, a remote borderworld. they all spend a few weeks farming, joining guilds, fighting pirates, etc. One day, John gets attacked and falls to a face hugger. The rest of his village is mostly wiped out and/or also turned. Henry and Bob survive, but while Henry joins the Marines for the action, Bob sticks with farming on Xen still at a new village.

John is now a member of the hive and all of his objectives in the game have changed. Instead of working with the humans and being in a player guild, he's now in a player hive. Eventually, his hive runs a raid on Bob's village, but Bob again survives killing a few Aliens in the process. If he survives long enough and gets to some face hugger/alien kill number he gets the option to become a Predator. (Not sure I'd absolutely force the player to change their species as there have been human predators in the comics. (Really!) Bob doesn't have to accept the offer...

(When an Alien dies, should they be offered the chance to start again as a human??? I'm not sure what I'd do about death yet.)

John also survived and did pretty well. His guild decides to start expanding and send John on a mission to infiltrate the human port city to stow away on a ship and get to another planet where he can help spread the aliens there.

Meanwhile, Henry is now a Marine and works with his squad (guild?) traveling the galaxy fighting aliens and sometimes predators.

There'd be tons to flesh out, but something like that could be a blast.

I agree. Every time Bioware has come out with a game it's been well received. Even the flawed Mass Effect had a really impressive core game and story line. It was all the other stuff that didn't quite seem to fit.

I remember being on the Bioware forums after the release of the first KOTOR game and everyone laughing that they should have had Bioware's writers do the prequels.

I think 3rd but I'm not sure 100% sure if the pics are you looking at your character fighting or is you are looking through the eyes of another.

3rd would be my guess. I can't think of any Bioware titles that aren't.

You don't have any perspective at all. A jedi needs not eyes to see. You are required to wear a helmet with the blast shield down while you play.

Bioware has disappointed me yet and this is just a movie with no actual gameplay footage but I am ready to give them my money for this and dragon age.

I have no memory of writing that.

Of course the response was so huge that the site had to shut down for a bit to be able to handle all the traffic.

If a large enough group of dtmaners join this universe, I might give it a go, but I'm not really fired up by any MMOs anymore.

Sure, I still have an account on the free UO shard, and the Star Trek MMO is getting me curious, but are any going to deliver the gaming utopia that was the first few years of UO?

No you will never get that again. Casual gamers are the target for MMOs now because there are so many more that it where the money is.

The reason I will be playing The Old Republic is because bioware seems to be doing quite a bit with the story part of the game. That was always my biggest issue with MMOs and why I never played them because I never felt like I was working towards anything besides killing the same person over and over. I don't really care about competing against other with the exception or TF2 and I think my favorite thing about that game is the art style.

I would have played WoW because they do a good job of creating the world but I never knew anyone else who played.

Seconded. UO was the first "big" MMOG out of the gates. As such, shit happened there that you'll never see anywhere else. It's simply because it really was the only game in town, it was a "new" thing, & no one knew what the fuck they were doing.

I've heard of "Mortal Online" having a lot of UO elements, such as full pvp/full loot.

Probably would deserve its own thread but there it is.

It looks like you have to buy and pay to participate in the Beta. Full prices. $40 for the game and $15/month.
