Run Fatboy Run (2007)
A new movie with Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) about a man who runs away from his life responsibilities.... until he gets motivated to make a drastic change, and decides to start training for a marathon that happens in three weeks. He has never been a runner prior to this, by the way.
It has a couple small laughs and one big laugh. I don't think it compares to SotD or HF, as those were two "we are fans of the X genre" movies, but this holds up as a light romantic comedy, I guess. It was worth the cost of a matinee, I reckon.
Directed by David Schwimmer. I was whelmed by his directorial competence, neither over nor under.

Agreed. It was standard light romantic comedy fair and was neither terrible nor great.
It was slow developing, but once it hit its stride, around the 30 minute mark, it got entertaining enough that I didn't regret renting it.
And that's the key, it is a perfect rental. You and the wife/husband can enjoy it without guilt or disappointment due to great hype.
I wanted to add that I don't think this film works with anyone other than Simon Pegg.

I own it as well. I've watched the first season. It's not bad. I'm surprised a U.S. network hasn't ripped it off yet.

Simon Pegg is a loser who runs from anything tough. That includes running from the altar where a pregnant Thandiwe Newton was waiting. Years later his life has not inched forward a bit, while Thandiwe has started dating Hank Azaria. The British marathon is upcoming and presents an opportunity for Pegg to turn everything around.
Directed by David Schwimmer. Yes, Ross.
There's nothing offensively stupid, but this is a by the numbers Rom-Com. It's fine, but not memorable.
I think Gordon said elsewhere that this was mildly entertaining. I agree.

BAM found it.
I know you searched, because I did too, and nothing obvious was getting a hit. Finally I searched "marathon" and found it a couple pages deep.

Threads merged.
I did search for an original thread using "Fatboy", but it didn't find it.
I'm really shocked that I had seen and reviewed this film previously. I had absolutely no recollection of a single thing about it. Nothing. That's never happened before, so I wonder if I thought it was a different Pegg romcom I was discussing or if I was drunk or something.

When did she change her name? At first I thought you were typoing it, but I just saw this spelling somewhere else. I thought it was Thandie.

I got that spelling from IMDB's page for this movie, so no idea.

Thandie Newton has revealed that she is reverting to the original Zimbabwean spelling of her first name, Thandiwe. “That's my name. It's always been my name.Apr 6, 2021
It all came down to a spelling mistake. Newton told British Vogue that the W was mistakenly left out in her very first screen credit and she had stuck with “Thandie” since. Although she didn't name the project, it is believed she is referring to the 1991 Australian film Flirting, given this was her film debut.Apr 6, 2021

I have a cousin once removed who's also named Thandiwe.
It's not me, it's someone else.
