13: Game of Death

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

A blockbuster exclusive which usually means it's a piece of crap. Shockingly, not so much this time.

Chit (he's Japanese) is a musical instrument salesman who is having a lot of bad luck. Right at his lowest moment, he gets a phone call offering to change his life in the form of $100 million. The game is simple, he has to perform 13 challenges or he gets nothing. The catch is that he doesn't know what the challenges are and he must perform them without anyone knowing why he is doing them.

They start off innocently, as you'd expect, but quickly turn gross or violent.

This is a Japanese film, so expect subtitles. It might have an English language option, but I didn't bother looking for it as I don't mind subtitles.

There are some hokey elements to the plot, particularly towards the end. Throughout the film, you'll be bugged by the shear logistics of the game Chit is playing. I mean, you can't keep a game like this a secret and even "bought" people talk. The ending is also sort of shitty, in that it's a twist and not one that makes a lot of sense. Still, the journey to that moment is a lot of fun.

This is a horror is the same way Death Race 2000 was a horror. It's mostly action with gore and violence, but there is a hint of comedy.

I look forward to a sequel, yes they set one up, or the copycat American version.

7 out of 10. (Keep in mind that it's Japanese and might also be an indy.)
