One of the "8 Movies to Die For" series from Horrorfest. (Not sure which year, I'm guessing this is the new batch.)
This is an indy, so I'll cut it a bit more slack.
I don't know that I would've classified this as a Horror film. Sure it has violence and there's some gore, but outside of that, it's not really a Horror film. Of course, the same could be said for Hostel, which this film emulates in ways.
The story, which is advertised to be based on true events, has three college students heading to Mexico and getting mixed up with a cult that is trying to find a human to sacrifice. During their adventures, they get the help of a rogue cop and a hottie bartender.
I don't know what here is "true" and what's fabricated, but I do remember American students going missing in Mexico and hearing that they might be linked to cults. If someone knows of a good article on those incidents, link it.
This isn't a horrible film, but it's also not great. The plot moves kind of slow and there's a lot of "stupid human maneuvers" written into the plot. A lot of terrible acting doesn't help matters.
I was a bit surprised when Sam Gamgee showed up. He actually has a pretty big role unlike most "big name" cameos in these indy films. +100 nerd points if you know who I'm talking about without looking it up.
Is it worth the rental? If you're a fan of film, the occult, or horror movies, then yes. It is the worst of the "8 Films to Die For" that I've seen so far (4 to date), but I think that's because I enjoyed the other three more, not because this was horrendous.. I think it's fine for what it is, and probably better directed and produced than bigger budget studio films. In that respect, I think it deserves your support.
Considering it's an indy, I'll say:
6 out of 10.
Borderlands
See, I would argue that the answer is only obvious to nerds and I say that as a card carrying member. I seriously don't think I would've known the answer. I mean, I probably would've guessed that, but I wouldn't have been 100% sure.
The point value was completely arbitrary. Although, I should note that I had it at 20, but increased it to 100.
