Movies with.... not happy endings.

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

Possibly spoilers, here, but nothing specific. I'll just be naming a few movies that, in my opinion, had unhappy endings. So I guess if you don't want to know even that much about as-yet unnamed movies, then stop reading.
I'll not embolden any of the movie titles, in case you are trying to exit the thread, so they don't catch your eye.

Is this a new phenomenon, or have I just not noticed it before? I've seen several movies lately that have decidedly unhappy endings: 1408, I Am Legend, and I've heard The Mist has a horribly nihilistic ending, and No Country for Old Men is just completely shitty. These are only the ones I can think of at the moment, I'm sure there's more. Is this a new Hollywood trend away from the "happy ending," or has it always been like this and I just not noticed it as much?

Political "America sucks" movies that bomb, and the unhappy ending. Is Hollywood deeply depressed?

I think that a great portion of the country is unhappy & it likes to be reminded of unhappy things so it can project the blame onto things it doesn't like.

Fuck knows different endings get tested & the ones you're seeing are the ones that got the best marks.

They say the way Hollywood goes you can tell what's happening in the country by the types of movies they put out. When things aren't so bad and the economy isn't in the tank they go for deeper thought provoking drama. When the world's going to hell they do the light fantasy stuff.

Don't know how true that holds today. I think we have more sci-fi/fantasy now than we used to simply because they can do more on the screen for cheaper than they used to be able to accomplish.

Hell, when Clinton was President they made Air Force One, which was basically a movie starring George W. Bush. "No more fucking around with terrorists," cowboy with guns, etc.

Then we elected W President and Hollywood went insane.

1408 had an unhappy ending? I don't remember it being unhappy.

Didn't Identity end badly? I've seen a few horror films where the villain/monster lives at the end. Most recently was Jeepers Creepers.

The book I Am Legend ends unhappily so I would expect the film to do the same.

The Mist, the short story, did NOT end on a unhappy note, but rather an uncertain one. Not sure how the movie ends as I haven't seen it.

I read the movie spoilers on The Mist................... I can't say anything without giving it away, but I personally will not be seeing that movie.

Not even renting it?

I haven't read The Mist in years, but I still remember the final line. " and ____".

Oddly, now I can't wait to see it.

I've got to know what has you so upset.

I could list a film I've seen recently as having yet another unhappy ending. I won't to avoid spoiling anything for anyone.

Although, I also nominate I Am Legend to be removed from this list. The ending was positively Disney-like compared to the book.
