Citizen Vigilante (2026)

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

Citizen Vigilante (2026)

Post by Leisher »

I had not heard about this movie until recently. It's been making waves on social media. Based on what I've gathered about it, it sounds like Death Wish except set in Germany and dealing with immigrants, specifically ones...let's just say, "not assimilating".

It's getting praise from who you'd expect and criticism from who you'd expect.

Uwe Boll directed it, which is a story all by itself. Armie Hammer stars, and again, a story all by itself.

Anyway, it's free on X for the next 48 hours:

I googled it and saw...

96% on rotten tomatoes (people reviews, not critics - it has 3 critic reviews which are all "this is terrible"). The "people" reviews all harp on "this isn't just a movie, this is a statement on real life, etc, etc, anti-woke stuff"

6.3 on IMDB

Absolutely tracks with what I said:

Reminds me of the bashing/praise of that child trafficking movie that was made outside of the Hollywood machine.

Watched it.

Uwe Boll wrote, produced, and directed this film. Uwe is not known for making great movies.

I do not think it's a tightly scripted movie, and it was certainly made on the cheap. I think the overall message lands, and that makes it important in this particular day and age. I believe it's a very accurate predictor of what's happened and what's coming. However, I'm also concerned that this is going to inspire people to violence. To be fair though, such violence has already begun, particularly in Ireland. Hell, one could argue it's been going on for centuries.

And I'll leave it at that as I want this to be a movie review and not get bogged down with politics.

Armie Hammer stars as an American doing business in Europe, and is driven to vigilantism by something. If they stated why, I missed it and I swear I was trying to give this movie my full attention. He is basically an amalgamation of John Wick and Batman. Very well financed, and thus, equipped, but also extremely detail oriented. I'll give him props, he does a very good job in creating this character and making him feel detached from society, but able to adapt when needed. Armie is out there finding victims, asking them if they got justice ("no"), and then providing it.

One question though: Is Armie Hammer Jon Hamm's long lost brother?

I have to throw a nod to Uwe Boll (give credit where it's due). There is a long sex scene in the middle of the movie where Armie does something very strange. It bothered me as the entire scene was out of place, so I discussed it with Copilot. Copilot, without finding anything online, gave a very good analysis of my description of the scene. Taking that into account and thinking about it further, I realize the scene 100% fits the character, and in turn, is also making a statement about what society needs to do. It's the best thing I've ever seen in a Uwe Boll movie. I realize that's not saying a lot, but this scene would work in a Tarantino movie. It's genuinely that good.

Quick sidenote for the just discussed scene: I would have also picked her.

Another scene is ridiculous when taken at face value, and that is Armie's inevitable face off with law enforcement. When really looked at though, and maybe I'm giving Uwe way too much credit, it's very symbolic of how law enforcement's hands are tied and how they're controlled by the real powers that be. In fact, that's the whole point of Costas Mandylor's Interpol Regional Chief character. He's doing his job. He's trying to do what's right. But he is told who to go after by the people above him. The ones who actually caused this entire situation. The rank and file police are literal pawns and the scene effectively shows that by making their actions so utterly stupid.

I can even see intentional symbolism in the opening scene based on who it involves and what happens. (Based on (sadly) multiple actual events, BTW.) If intended, it would again be very well thought out. It's just as likely completely accidental though.

Based on Uwe's previous work, it's tough to give him too much credit for the heavy symbolism. I do not remember that ever being his style. It was just violence and bad dialogue in badly made films. But has he found his way? Every artist is as capable of making shit as they are masterpieces. AND I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS A MASTERPIECE!!! However, I think it would be fair to say that it is a good statement piece. He isn't telling a story, but rather commenting on the state of the world.

Is it worth watching? That's tough. I kind of believe you have to know what you're walking into. If you take this film at face value, it sucks. It's low budget, has weird angles or lingering shots to fill time, and there's no real plot. If you understand that it's actually a commentary on the state of things, what Uwe believes will (or wants to) happen, and that the scenes seem to be heavy with symbolism, I think you'll..."enjoy" is the wrong word...experience the film correctly.

Were they fake? I didn't get that impression, but I wasn't looking at them that closely. Plus, she still was the best choice in that hallway.

That picture does give that impression. When she's standing up, which is most of the scene, it wasn't as obvious.

Still would.

Yeah, the lay down pics are obvious. Boobs do not stay up like that.
