Dead Alive

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

An early Peter Jackson flick.

I caught 10 minutes of this movie at Cakedaddy's house one night a year or so ago... and we were both cracking up at the over-the-top gore.

The entire movie is over-the-top gore.

It's set in Wellington, New Zealand... and that alone is interesting in that you see destrinctly... strange... things. Trolly cars that are about 3 feet wide, for example.

The protagonist is a mid-20's man who has an overbearing mother. He tries to have a life, meets a girl, etc... but mommy dearest always demands more attention.... then it becomes zombie movie.

It's sort of interesting in that even long after mom is dead (alive), he still feels an obligation to her...

It's an older movie, but it's worth seeing at least once. No cgi in sight, so that's an automatic ++.

IMDB calls that movie Brain Dead.

I remember renting Bad Taste because someone on Usenet recommended it to Bruce Cambell fans.
The cover on IMDB shows an alien using the middle finger, but I remember it being two fingers (the British version of the middle finger).

I remember not hating the movie, but not liking it enough to make a copy of the rental.

I saw this movie years ago (during the death throws of my 1st marriage). This was long before The Lord of The Rings was even in the works. I laughed my ass off at that movie.

It had me a bit concerned about LoTR when I heard Peter Jackson was directing it. :)

Directed by Peter Jackson.

While discussing film one day, a friend here at the office loaned me his copy of Dead Alive. A film I had heard of but had never seen.

The story is about a young girl who meets a man with an overprotective mother who gets bitten by a rat/monkey thing that turns her into a zombie like creature.

Anyway, this has to be Pete's first foray into directing (?) and you can tell by some of the up close shots.

The acting is a total question mark because it was beyond awful, but that might have been the point.

Then there's the special effects. They're pure B list, but freakin' hilarious. There could possibly be more gore here than all the Friday the 13th movies combined. I'm positive it's more than all the Halloween films. This is "trick your girlfriend/wife into watching it with you and laugh as she squirms" gore. Granted, none of it is really realistic. In fact, the blood mostly appears more pinkish than the dark red blood we're used to these days.

Just a hilarious parody of horror films. It's not as well acted as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, nor does it touch the classic humor of Evil Dead 2, but Dead Alive ranks up there as a classic.

The gore, performances, storyline, etc are all so far over the top that you'll have to laugh at the ridiculousness of it all.

7 out of 10.

It never even occurred to me to look for a thread.

I actually figured Malcolm as the most likely person who would've mentioned this film previously.

Saw this years ago. I think Pete was intentionally trying to make this as hokey as possible. He did show he'd actual directing talent before he got LotR.
