I'd heard how much this movie sucked, but DVR'd it anyway.

It didn't suck.

Not M. Night's best movie, but better than average for movies, overall.

Maybe your expectations were so low it would have seemed good comparatively no matter what.

Probably. I was expecting something for children, for some reason. But it was worth seeing, IMO.
