Despite Maxwell, actual victims, his resort staff (timing of the Epstein ban), and previously leaked reports/court documents clearing him (And this assumes his innocence based on that. If we discover otherwise, he belongs under the prison with the rest.), he cannot accept that he was friends with Epstein. He thinks it makes him look weak or something. He, literally, is incapable of admitting poor judgement or a bad decision on ANY issue. Doing so in this situation has made him look guilty AF.
