ST:TOS is now on the local FOX affiliate here every Sunday at 1 a.m.
So, I've been watching it whenever I can over the last few months and I have a simple question:
Do any of the episodes actually take place in space or in a futuristic setting?
The last five episodes I've seen involved a planet of Nazis, a planet run by Mongols, a planet stuck in the Dark Ages, a planet of 30s Chicago era mobsters, and time travel back to 60s Earth.

Star Trek: TOS
They had some serious budget issues. "The Trouble With Tribbles" almost had to be rewritten to place them on an "Old west" style planetside outpost rather than a space station. Money for sets and such. I think that's why I was so disappointed with TNG after a while. They should have been able to do more with the writing without the constraints TOS had.

I get the budgets thing, but I think TOS could've reused more sets rather than constantly "going back in the past".
I agree with you on TNG. I think for as much as it revitalized the Sci-Fi genre, and it did, it could've been even better than it was. Maybe a new Trek series could actually explore alien worlds rather than a bunch of Earth clones. I doubt they'll get there though since the people running the show seem to think Trek's past is the way to go.
