A few weeks back this hit Netflix and I heard cries of child pornography. I've also heard "that's an overreaction" from other people.
Well, it's trending on Twitter again today. Here are some highlights:
All three of my girls were in dance for years. All three have been involved in theater their whole lives (musical theater has lots of dancing). I have 1 girl who still is in dance and will be through high school. I have attended a LOT of different dance recitals for multiple companies. Those dance recitals have dances by males and females aged 2-90 (seriously). My wife and kids watch that stupid Dance Moms show, and I often have been in the room when they're watching it.
I have never seen choreographed dancing like the dancing in that clip outside of a strip club, with the only exception being the play Chicago.

Racist.
But seriously, would you be cool with your daughters doing this dance?

Isn't that like "Watch porn to fight the exploitation of out of work actresses"?

Have you read an interview with the director?
Her stance is in the article I posted.

Hey I want to spread awareness for rape victims by making a movie that will really turn on rapists, and we'll have excruciatingly long rape scenes, that'll show em.

I watched just the dance clip last night, to see what's up. I already knew about the intended context.
I skipped through the 4 minutes, I got the gist and it made me uncomfortable.
Pedos don't need to wait for something like this to jack off, they just need any old kid show. Check out the YouTube videos of clothed girls doing regular things with a million hits. They've been jacking it to disney movies since way before the internet.
This movie , according to the creators , is showing you how bad a situation is, while making you watch it for yourself, to see. My knee-jerk reaction was that you can't censor art just because it makes you uncomfortable, and after having seen what everyone is complaining about, I hold to that. It isn't going to create or embolden any new pedos, and it might actually help get the child erotic dance shows stopped .... Even though it opens a whole new can of worms over who gets to decide which dance routines are obscene.

I think where I believe the movie fails is in the marketing. From title to trailers this movie was not portrayed as a hard hitting documentary about the sexualization of children.
Just the title alone is cringe.
If someone made a hard hitting documentary about the dangers of the porn industry would "Hot Fucking Sluts" be a good name to relay that message?

You're making my point. That's a good title for a documentary discussing that profession.
It isn't "Sluts", which would be a one word title telling you how to think about the subjects, like "Cuties".

I've heard a lot of criticism of the marketing... But to be fair, I saw zero of it. First and last time I ever heard of it was from outrage, and I'm a daily Netflix user.

It was advertised to me once, which is slightly odd, but understandable. I watch mostly horror, scifi and adult themed comedies, but my kids have gotten onto my account and watched cartoons.
