Apocalypto (2006)

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

Apocalypto (2006)

Subtitle alert.

Very hard to find film. Maybe it's because of Mel Gibson's issues (he directs this movie)? Maybe it's because it shows non-white people doing a lot of the things ignorant people think only whitey did? Who knows?

A peaceful Mayan tribe is living perfectly with nature. They are a large family. Gibson really does a great job of setting the viewer up here to have some feels. As we all know, not everyone in the world is nice and they come calling.

That's when the film turns on its ear. It's not super gory, but it's tough to watch. Shit just keeps going south, and then...hope. That's when the film takes another left turn and becomes a completely different kind of movie.

I really enjoyed it, and judging by the ratings at various sites, I'm not alone. I wonder why it doesn't get more love?

It's not all perfect though. There's a moment where a prophecy is given and it really hurts the film's credibility. A little too magical in this world grounded in reality. I do enjoy how we're shown how the people in charge use the prophecies to stay in charge. Mel might have been subtly sending some messages there.

Good film.

People were always praying to the gods in this film, why not have one show up as a smallpox-ridden little girl? Seemed perfect.

I liked it. Mel can make a movie.

Also, it's on Amazon Prime.
