That's a storytelling device I hate more and more over the time, "We were the real monsters all along." It's overplayed as a trope. Walking Dead was doing it early on, the roving evil gangs are always worse than the actual zombies. I'm over that.

I don’t think that’s the case in this movie though. The trope you are talking about is when they show human nature being worse than a monster.
The bird box evil humans have been altered. They are creepy but it isnt because they are reverting to base human instincts. They’ve become messiahs or zealots for the unknown cosmic horror. Very Lovecraftian.
