Yay my friend's HBOGo account!

Helms, Hamm, Renner, Burress, and Johnson (whose face you'll recognize, but you probably won't remember why...I didn't) play life long friends who have been playing the same game of tag for years.

This is based on a true story. (Really. Stick around for the credits.)

Very cute movie with some chuckles and some feels. It's slightly scattered on character development and in style, but it can be forgiven because the movie is fun.

Rashida Jones, Leslie Bibb, and Isla Fisher (who I think I have a crush on...I have a weakness for redheads) show up to join the fun.

Renner's over the top skills and preparation, not to mention the game in public places stretches your imagination, but again, it's based on a true story and is entertaining.

Not a classic of cinema, but a fun movie. I'd enjoy seeing a sequel, but it'll never happen.

If you research, it was VERY LOOSELY based on the true story. I can forgive lowering the number of players, but the main 2 plot points driving the game through the movie were fake. MANY of the tricks they used to catch each other were real though. Fun movie, but barely based on truth.

I was referring to the the game, the overall theme of why, and the WSJ article.

Clearly they're not going to copy everything as that would be boring.

I was just sayin'. Doesn't take away from the movie being fun, etc. I enjoyed it. I was just disappointed in how from reality it was.

******** SPOILER ************

In real life:
No one was dying of cancer.
No one was 'never it'.

The two main plot points were fake. Was BARELY based on the actual players' lives/experiences.

I don't disagree, but those added points are really what kept it from otherwise being a Three Stooges episode. Were you disappointed that the real life story wasn't as engaging as the made up parts? Not being a smart ass, a legit question.

It's why the disclaimer says "based on" and not "an accurate telling of".

I'm disappointed in the marketing of "Based on a true story" when it wasn't. It was based on a game real people played, but the story they told, was WAY off from true. I think they know "true stories" do better, so they ran with it. But it wasn't really true, at all. I have to wonder what the original players thought of the movie. "We are going to make a movie about you guys!" If I were them, I'd be like "? . . .That wasn't us. . .?" They stole their story, then raped it.

The opening scenes with Ed going after John was awesome. Three stooges when he threw the chair at the window and it hit him? Sure. But it was funny. The one liners through out were funny. Many of the tag scenes were based on actual footage the guys had, and they were fun to watch. Jeremy being a super hero level person was over the top, and not that funny. I think they could have stayed truer to the source material and still be funny and fun to watch.

Sometimes a true story isn't that interesting and needs some spice. If these guys really had no drama in real life, why wouldn't I just watch those clips at the end on YouTube? Why would I need a full movie? Where's the drama, the interest? I'm guessing they had to add that stuff or else it would have had to have been a documentary.

And I say that as a huge proponent of the concept that Hollywood shouldn't fuck with existing IPs.

Then don't say it's based on a true story. Because the story wasn't true at all. Sure, there were guys that played tag. But the story they were telling, wasn't real at all. Had they left out that it was based on a true story and just said it was about adult men playing tag, I would have still watched it because of who was in it and the previews entertained me. But once I found out that the story isn't true at all, I felt cheated and lied to. Their intention was to sucker me in with a 'true story' movie, and it was just a big lie.

Cake, I don't disagree that it can be somewhat annoying how much they veer off from the actual events when they say "based on a true story", but this seems like pretty standard stuff. Though I always have preferred for them to say, "Inspired by actual events" when they get too far off the beaten path. But where's the line? "Based on a true story" have been this bad or worse for the last 10-20 years. Hell, they turned a true story about a kidnapping and murder into a freakin' comedy with Pain & Gain (which I'm sure delighted the family of the victim). Do they all rub you like this?

I remember at first being very disappointed at all the liberties they took with The Mothman Prophesies until I read what it was based on and realized there was absolutely no movie or even a coherent story from a couple of disjointed sightings of something and an unrelated bridge collapse.

I think Cake has to be trolling at this point. :D

Catt, what movie is that? I've seen it, but don't remember. Comparing Gal Gadot to any woman is really unfair. Although, if I remember correctly, Isla Fisher has her own lingerie scene in that movie, and it's quite pleasant.

Also, believing a woman's sexiness and/or sexual ability is linked solely to how perfect her body looks is folly. (Although Gadot genuinely seems like a woman who would be a blast in the sheets.)

I'm going to go with Gal Gadot here.

Keeping up with the Joneses. I've never seen it, but just saw that posted somewhere else today

Not trolling. . .

I don't feel this jaded by all 'Based on a true story' movies as I know most of them aren't. But this one, they managed to get me to like the characters and 'feel for them' because it was supposed to be real. So when I found out it was all fake, I was let down. Not let down that someone didn't died, but that I felt bad for the guys in real life only to find out everything was fake.

Gal's had a kid since that scene. Wonder what her body looks like now.

Personally, I don't think there's a wrong answer between the two.

But it's not. All of the story is fake. The only real thing is that guys played tag. I would be satisfied with "inspired by a true story".

You are crazy stuck on semantics. "Based on a true story" is the same as "inspired by a true story".

Group of friends play a child's game endlessly? Check.
Deeper meaning is to maintain friendships? Check.
New York Times (or is it the Wall Street Journal?) article? Check.

As Catt said, this isn't a documentary.

Agree to disagree I guess. The story "Dying man and friend who's never been tagged". Those are the main plot points, and they are fake. NOT based on reality.

And I see a big difference between inspired by and based on.

Based on: Band of Brothers
Inspired by: Tag!

HUGE difference in my opinion. Band of Brothers isn't a documentary either, but it stayed WAY truer to the source material. You can stay true without being a documentary.
