The Lobster (2015)

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

Posting this because it's getting good reviews and the last dark comedy Colin Ferrell was in was great.

This movie sounds immensely retarded.

I watched this on the flight down to SC yesterday. After viewing it I can honestly tell you that this is a movie I've seen...

The premise is interesting. Basically, if you're single you get thrown in a "hotel" and have 45 days to meet a mate or you get turned into the animal of your choice. That's not a play on words. It is exactly as you read it. I don't know what the cutoff age is or how long you can be single after a death or divorce as they don't ever explain that in the film.

(Let me get this out of the way now: You never see the transformation.)

The hotel itself is really, really weird. The staff seems to really only be a few people and the things they do are bizarre, to put it mildly. They seem to be there to assist the residents, while also dehumanizing them.

To steal a line from an IMDB commentor, "Everyone seems to be autistic." That's a great description of the acting in this film. It's not that its bad, but there was a clear choice made.

Another odd note about this world is that you seem to need a common trait to hook up. So if you have buck teeth, you'd better hope to meet a woman with buck teeth.

I don't hate that I saw this movie, but I'd never recommend it like In Bruges, which is another dark comedy starring Colin Ferrell. I saw a breakdown of this film claiming it's about the pressures society puts on us for relationships and what we put on ourselves in finding a mate, and I agree. It even covers what happens when you're an outsider and how that status has its own rules.

This will be way too far out there for some. Too slow for others. Perfect for the pretentious. But for most of us I think it's a movie that has some genuine laughs, one horrific image/scene, and some interesting views on relationships and fitting in.

The Lobster (wtf, netflix)

Some sort of world in which if you aren't paired off as a romantic couple, you are forced to be turned into any animal of your choosing.

And then if you escape from that process, you wind up on the run with crazies who won't let you pair up at all, even if you wanted to.

And "perfect compatibility" seems to be based on, "We both get frequent nosebleeds," and, "We're both nearsighted."

This movie is weird and you should skip it unless you want to just see a really weird movie.
