Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden told ABC News that police were responding to reports of shots fired when someone opened fire on them.
A witness told WBRZ-TV that a man was dressed in black with his face covered shooting indiscriminately when he walked out between a convenience store and car wash across from Hammond Air Plaza. Police closed the streets between the police department’s headquarters and Interstate 12.
Eye witness reports this was not a planned attack on police. Started as shoot out between civilians and police intervened. One of the original belligerent was reported to be carrying an assault rifle.
