I agree with you, here.... though.... if you do four years of honorable military service, you get a shitload of free money for college. Last I heard the GI Bill was $1500/month free and clear as long as you're going full time. That's tuition, books, food, and an apartment with only one roommate off campus.... add the Pell grants, and it is an easy 4 years.
After you do a military contract you realize how easy college actually is, and you get the most out of it.

That depends on a lot of factors. Here once all the revenue and expenses are considered we take a loss of $45 on each student for each developmental class they take. We take the hit in order to help them get through them and into regular classes, but all in all from a financial standpoint we'd rather have students that didn't need it to begin with.
I'm talking more about the places that charge upwards of $10K per semester. The places that get so many applicants they can turn some away. Also the shady-ass for-profit places that give you all the benefits of public university debt with none of the drawbacks of learning.

I support cheap or free higher education. It always worked well for me in SimCity. It there has to be something to constrain the amount of resources that education is taking up, as it keeps growing gfaster than I relation without the benefits.

Yeah, that constraint is the market place which giving it away for free (ie. the tax payers pay for it) means the costs are going to spiral out of control.
